The position available is an entry-level Driver Trainee role, designed for candidates eager to begin or enhance their careers in commercial driving within the foodservice distribution industry. This role is pivotal in learning how to operate tractor trailers or straight trucks across intrastate and interstate routes, including local deliveries, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight routes. The primary responsibility is the safe and timely delivery of various food and food-related products to customers, ensuring compliance with rigorous company policies and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.

This job offers a starting pay of $24.72 per hour and a 4-day workweek following the completion of training, with shift dispatch times between 4 am and 6 am. The Driver Trainee works closely with experienced driver trainers to develop skills in vehicle operation, safety checks, cargo inspection, and customer service. The role involves not only driving and vehicle operation but also hands-on tasks such as loading, unloading, securing freight, maintaining clean work areas, and accurate documentation of deliveries and hours worked.

Success in this role requires a commitment to safety, professionalism, and teamwork. Drivers are expected to uphold company standards in all interactions with customers, vendors, and coworkers, contributing to a positive and respectful work environment. The training program is comprehensive, providing a pathway to obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT Health Card, equipping trainees with the qualifications necessary for advancement within the company. The Driver Trainee must also demonstrate physical stamina by handling freight loads often ranging between 60 to 90 pounds and utilize equipment such as two-wheelers and lift gates.

  • High school diploma or GED
  • valid CDL A license
  • 21 years of age or older
  • clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
  • ability to pass DOT mandated drug and road tests
  • meet all state licensing and certification requirements
  • able to lift and handle freight weights between 60 and 90 pounds
  • ability to operate two-wheeler, lift gate and other equipment
  • obtain or hold valid DOT Health Card

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • internal PFG candidates with 1 year of service in good standing
  • able to attain CDL Permit and DOT Health Card
  • external candidates with 0-6 months commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL A license
  • minimum 21 years of age
  • meet all state licensing and certification requirements
  • clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
  • pass post offer drug and road tests
  • attains or currently holds valid DOT Health Card
  • able to hand-lift and use equipment to move product cases ranging 60 to 90 pounds

Job Duties

  • Attend and successfully complete entry level driver trainee or dock to driver training program
  • ride with and assist driver trainer in executing deliveries
  • perform all required safety checks including pre and post trip inspections
  • follow all DOT regulations and company safe driving policies
  • inspect trailer for properly loaded and secured freight and complete associated paperwork
  • drive to and deliver customer orders according to predetermined route schedule
  • unload products, perform damage control checks, verify deliveries and collect payment where required
  • ensure tractor, trailer and freight are locked and secured at all times
  • unload damaged goods and returns, complete necessary paperwork
  • complete daily hours of service records and logs
  • perform housekeeping duties in tractor and loading dock areas
  • perform other related duties as assigned
