Job Description
Performance Food Group (PFG) is a leading broadline distributor specializing in delivering high-quality food products and related items to a diverse range of customers. These customers include independent restaurants, hotels, healthcare facilities, schools, and quick-service eateries. PFG stands out not only as a food distributor but also as a trusted partner in the foodservice industry. The company boasts a talented team of sales representatives, chefs, consultants, and other industry professionals who work closely with customers to improve their operations, develop innovative menus, select the best products, and implement effective operational strategies. This commitment goes beyond simple distribution, focusing on supporting independent restaurant owners and other clients in achieving their business goals. As a part of its commitment to creating a positive and inclusive working environment, PFG emphasizes rewards, recognition, respect, and growth opportunities for its team members. The organization provides competitive pay and comprehensive benefits starting from the very first day of employment, including health and wellness benefits, an employee stock purchase plan, 401K employer matching, education assistance, and paid time off. Alongside these offerings, the company promotes a four-day workweek after training, supporting work-life balance for its employees.
The role available at Performance Food Group is an entry-level Driver Trainee position, an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to start a career in commercial driving within the food distribution sector. This position is designed to teach new drivers the skills necessary to operate tractor trailers or straight trucks safely and efficiently, covering intrastate and interstate routes, including local deliveries, overnight routes, and over-the-road (OTR) transport. The Driver Trainee will participate in the company’s structured training program, which includes attending and completing the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program. Trainees will ride along with experienced trainers to learn practical route execution and delivery procedures. This hands-on training ensures that the trainee understands and adheres strictly to all company policies, safety standards, and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Key responsibilities for this position include performing mandatory safety inspections of tractors/trucks and trailers, ensuring freight is properly loaded and secured, and maintaining accurate delivery paperwork. Driver Trainees will deliver and unload various food products, interact professionally with customers and co-workers, and ensure all deliveries meet quality and safety standards. The role requires physical activity, such as hand-lifting, using equipment like two-wheelers and lift gates, and maintaining cleanliness in trailers and loading areas. Successful candidates will also complete daily logs and reports as required by federal and company regulations.
This position starts with an early shift time between 4 am and 6 am, reflecting the importance of timely deliveries in the food distribution chain. The average salary for this role ranges from $77,000 to $88,000 annually, with potential earnings up to $90,000, which signifies a lucrative entry point into the commercial driving field. Additionally, trainees and drivers benefit from working within a safe and inclusive culture that values every team member.
In summary, Performance Food Group offers a stable and rewarding career path for individuals seeking to enter the transportation and logistics sector with a focus on foodservice distribution. The company’s comprehensive training, competitive compensation, and extensive benefits package make this driver trainee role an ideal starting point for a long-term career in this industry. The importance of punctual, safe deliveries to America’s food distribution system provides meaningful and essential work that contributes positively to communities and businesses nationwide.
