The Driver Trainee role at Performance Food Group represents an essential entry-level position within the company’s logistics and distribution network. This position offers a competitive earning potential of up to $90,000 annually, along with a favorable work schedule that includes a 4-day work week and shift dispatch times between 2:30 AM and 5:30 AM. As a Driver Trainee, individuals will embark on a comprehensive training program designed to teach them the skills needed to safely operate tractor trailers or straight trucks in intrastate and interstate environments. The routes vary from local deliveries to over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and overnight assignments, providing trainees with broad exposure to different facets of transportation and logistics.

The role’s primary goal is to ensure timely and safe delivery of food and related products to customers. Trainees will be responsible for learning and adhering to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company policies on safety and performance. They will engage in hands-on training, riding with experienced drivers and assisting in the delivery process while gradually taking on more responsibilities as their skills develop. The position emphasizes professionalism in communication and customer interactions, ensuring that all services are executed in accordance with preferred work methods and excellent customer service standards.

Job Requirements

  • Valid CDL A license
  • Must be 21 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent
  • Clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
  • Pass post offer drug test
  • Pass road test
  • Attain or have valid current DOT Health Card
  • Able to hand-lift and utilize equipment to move and stack product cases or freight generally ranging from 60 to 90 pounds
  • Meet all state licensing and certification requirements where applicable

  • 6-12 months experience with a CDL A for external entry level hires
  • Must be at least 21 years of age

Job Duties

  • Attend and successfully complete the entry level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program all training documentation completed and maintained
  • Ride with and assist driver trainer in executing deliveries follow all instructions and directions provided
  • Perform all required safety checks including pre and post trip inspections of tractor truck and trailer according to DOT regulations inspect equipment to meet company safety standards report safety issues or repairs
  • Follow all DOT regulations and company safety policies immediately report any safety hazards
  • Inspect trailer for properly loaded and secured freight perform count check and check customer invoices complete all required paperwork accurately
  • Drive to deliver customer orders according to route schedule
  • Unload products transport items into designated customer storage verify delivery obtain signatures and collect payments as required
  • Ensure tractor trailer and freight are locked and secured at all times
  • Unload damaged goods and customer returns complete necessary paperwork
  • Complete daily log of hours of service according to DOT state and company requirements
  • Perform housekeeping duties in tractor loading dock area keep trailers clean secure equipment complete paperwork at the end of shift
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
