The Driver Trainee is responsible for learning the skills necessary to safely and efficiently operate tractor-trailers or straight trucks on a variety of routes, including intrastate, interstate, local deliveries, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle runs, and overnight shifts. This role involves hands-on training, including riding with experienced drivers, assisting in deliveries, and performing all required safety inspections and compliance checks according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company policies. The trainee will gain valuable experience in handling food and related products, ensuring timely arrivals, and maintaining a high standard of customer service by interacting professionally with customers, vendors, and team members. Key responsibilities also include accurate record-keeping, freight inspection, securing loads, unloading products, and general equipment maintenance and cleanliness. Job Requirements
- Clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
- Pass post offer drug test
- Pass road test
- Attain or hold valid current DOT Health Card
- Able to hand-lift and use equipment to move freight weighing 60 to 90 pounds
- Strong commitment to safety and compliance
- Good communication and customer service skills
Job Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED or equivalent
- External entry level hire with 6-12 months CDL A experience
- Valid CDL A license
- Must be 21 years of age or older
- Meet all state licensing and certification requirements where applicable
Job Duties
- Attend and successfully complete PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program
- Ride with and assist driver trainer in executing deliveries
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections of tractor, truck and trailer
- Follow all DOT regulations and company safe driving policies
- Inspect trailer for properly loaded and secured freight and verify paperwork
- Drive to and deliver customer orders according to predetermined routes
- Unload products and verify delivery with customer, collecting payments where necessary
- Secure all equipment, trailers, and freight at all times
- Complete daily records of hours of service and maintain logs
- Perform housekeeping duties in tractor and loading dock areas
- Perform other related duties as assigned
