This specific role is a delivery driver position responsible for operating a tractor-trailer to deliver and unload products to Sysco customers. The role requires adherence to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and Sysco safety procedures, demonstrating a strong focus on compliance and safe working practices. It involves working flexible hours including overtime, weekends, holidays, and early morning shifts to meet the demanding schedules of customers.
The delivery driver will handle the complete delivery process, which includes safely operating the vehicle within assigned time windows, unloading products by hand or with equipment like hand carts, and placing items in designated storage locations while navigating all types of terrains and weather conditions. The job requires physical strength and stamina as frequent lifting, pushing, and moving of products weighing between 1 to 100 pounds is common. The role also demands precision in verifying deliveries, obtaining customer signatures, handling payments, and managing discrepancies.
This is a critical customer-facing position where drivers are expected to provide superior customer service, communicate effectively with management and clients, and maintain the cleanliness and operational readiness of their equipment. Additional responsibilities include performing vehicle inspections, maintaining proper DOT logs and paperwork, and adhering strictly to SyscoSafe preferred work methods. Job Requirements
- Must be 21+ years of age
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's license with a driving record that meets company insurability standards
- 1-year commercial driving experience
- Completion of Sysco's Entry-Level Driver Training Program within first 12 weeks of employment (for internal associates or if market conditions warrant) in place of 1 year CMV experience
- Pass employment testing
- Ability to read and speak English sufficiently to converse with the general public, understand highway signs, respond to inquiries, and make report entries
- Ability to operate vehicle in various traffic and weather conditions
- Meet or exceed minimum productivity levels established by the company
- Meet or exceed established cases per error goals
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- 2 years local food or beverage delivery experience
- Pallet breakdown and hand cart delivery experience
- Demonstrate strong customer relations and problem resolution skills
- Effective planning and organization of work activities independently
- Good working knowledge of product and inventory control techniques
- Maintain ongoing inter-department communications related to routing, safety and customer relations
- Able to read, write and communicate in English related to job and safety regulations
- Basic math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
Job Duties
- Deliver product within assigned route schedule and time windows
- Immediately inform the management team of any deviations
- Unload product from trailer by hand or using a hand cart and place in designated customer storage areas
- Frequently lift, push, or move product weighing 1-75 pounds up to 100 pounds
- Constantly bend and twist while loading and unloading products
- Verify delivery of items with customer and obtain proper signatures
- Contact management for authorization when discrepancies on invoice and communicate all errors or returns
- Collect money when required
- Pickup, load and unload damaged goods and customer returns and complete necessary paperwork
- Perform pre-trip and post-trip responsibilities following DOT regulations and Sysco policies
- Perform coupling procedures for the tractor-trailer as needed
- Complete DOT logs, company vehicle maintenance reports, and reconcile with appropriate company representative
- Follow SyscoSafe preferred work methods and report unsafe conditions
- Maintain sanitary conditions in tractor, trailer, warehouse and yard
- Maintain and safely operate assigned equipment including hand carts, pallets, load bars and personal protective equipment
- Attend all required company meetings
- Other duties as assigned
