The role of a Driver, Hourly CDL-B at Vistar is crucial in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the country’s food supply chain. Drivers operate tractor trailers or straight trucks on a variety of routes including intrastate, interstate local, over-the-road, shuttle, and overnight runs. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday, with departures averaging between 3 AM and 5 AM.

The driver’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safe and timely delivery of food and food-related products to customers while adhering strictly to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company safety policies. Beyond driving, the driver acts as the face of Vistar, building lasting relationships with customers and providing exceptional service. This role requires excellent communication skills to interact professionally with customers, vendors, and co-workers, ensuring queries and concerns are addressed promptly and accurately.

Key duties include conducting thorough safety checks on tractors, trailers, and freight, performing accurate loading and unloading, verifying delivery orders, completing required paperwork, handling payments where necessary, and maintaining clean and organized equipment. Drivers are also responsible for reporting any safety issues or damage, securing freight and equipment, and complying with federal and state regulations regarding hours of service and operational logs.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • valid CDL-B license
  • minimum age of 21 years
  • meet all state licensing and certification requirements as applicable
  • clean motor vehicle report for the past three years
  • successful completion of post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • successful completion of a road test
  • possession of a valid DOT health card or ability to obtain one
  • physical ability to hand-lift and use equipment such as two-wheeler and lift gate to move various product cases weighing between 10 to 90 pounds

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • valid CDL-B
  • must be 21 plus years of age
  • meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
  • clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
  • pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • pass road test
  • attains or has valid current DOT health card and/or able to secure new DOT health card
  • able to hand-lift and utilize two-wheeler, lift gate and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout shift

Job Duties

  • Performs all required safety checks including pre/post trip inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to DOT regulations
  • inspects tractor/truck and trailer to ensure they meet company safety standards and takes appropriate action as needed
  • follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • immediately reports all safety hazards
  • inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • performs count check of items and checks customer invoices of products that have been loaded
  • checks and completes all required paperwork associated with freight
  • moves tractor to the loading dock and attaches preloaded trailer as needed
  • drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
  • performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
  • verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
  • collects money where required
  • loads customer returns on to trailer and secures trailer doors
  • ensures that tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and secured
  • unloads damaged goods and customer returns and completes necessary paperwork
  • completes daily record of hours of service and enters in log in accordance with federal DOT, state, and company requirements
  • performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean
  • secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork at the end of the shift
  • performs other related duties as assigned
