The role of CDL-A Driver at Performance Foodservice is vital to maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the country’s food supply chain. This position involves driving tractor trailers or straight trucks on various routes including intrastate and interstate, local deliveries, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, overnight, and drive-and-drop routes. Drivers are responsible for delivering food and food-related products safely and on schedule, adhering to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Beyond just transportation, drivers serve as the face of the company, building and maintaining strong customer relationships by providing professional and reliable service.

The CDL-A Driver position offers competitive pay starting at $88,000 annually after the completion of the training period. The work schedule is primarily Tuesday through Saturday, with dispatch occurring between 1-5 AM, and applicants must be available for layover routes. In this role, drivers perform essential safety checks including pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and company safety standards. They communicate effectively and professionally with customers, vendors, and coworkers, managing paperwork accurately and completely. Drivers handle loading and unloading responsibilities, damage control, and verifying deliveries with customer signatures. They also collect payments where required and ensure all equipment and products are securely handled and transported. Maintaining clean and orderly tractor and trailer conditions, completing all necessary logs and paperwork, and complying with federal and company guidelines are standard expectations.

Performance Foodservice seeks drivers who are at least 21 years old, hold a valid CDL-A license, have at least 12 months of commercial driving experience, and a clean motor vehicle report for the past three years. Candidates must pass a post-offer drug test, criminal background check, road test, and either already have or be able to obtain a valid DOT Health Card. The position requires the physical ability to hand-lift and use equipment like two-wheelers and lift gates to move product cases weighing typically between 10-35 pounds and sometimes up to 60-90 pounds.

Job Qualifications

  • Able to hand-lift and utilize two-wheeler, lift gate and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout shift

Job Duties

  • Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
  • Functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and perform any duty assigned to best serve the company
  • Performs all required safety checks (i.e., pre/post trip) including inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
  • Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • Immediately reports all safety hazards
  • Inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • Performs count check of items and check customer invoices of products that have been loaded
  • Checks and completes in an accurate and in legible fashion all required paperwork associated with freight
  • Moves tractor to the loading dock and attach preloaded trailer as needed
  • Drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • Unloads products from the trailer, transports items into designated customer storage areas
  • Performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contact supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
  • Verifies delivery of items with customer and obtain proper signatures
  • Collects money (cash or checks) where required
  • Loads customer returns on to trailer and secures trailer doors
  • Ensures that tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or always secured
  • Unloads damaged goods and customer returns and bring to the driver check-in and complete necessary paperwork
  • Unloads all equipment, materials and remove trash from trailers as required
  • Completes daily record of hours of service and enter in log in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keep trailers clear and clean as required
  • At the end of the shift secure all equipment and complete all necessary paperwork
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
