The CDL-A Driver position at Performance Foodservice plays a vital role within the country's food supply chain. This role is critical in ensuring timely and safe delivery of food and related products to customers, making these drivers the face of the company and building lasting relationships with clients. The average yearly income for this position is $80,000+, with additional quarterly safety bonus opportunities. Employees work a 5-day week, Monday through Saturday, with weekends off varying but no Sundays required. Shifts average 10 hours and are primarily ramp work, with dispatch times from 12 AM to 5 AM. There may be team routes and overnight layovers on certain delivery routes.
The CDL-A Driver is responsible for operating tractor trailers or straight trucks on intrastate and interstate routes, including local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and drive-and-drop routes. The driver ensures deliveries are made promptly and in compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. This role involves conducting safety inspections, securing and unloading freight, managing delivery paperwork accurately, and maintaining clear communication with customers, vendors, and team members. Drivers must handle various physical demands such as lifting freight that ranges in weight and must be proficient with equipment like two-wheelers and lift gates.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent
- minimum 12 months commercial driving experience
- valid CDL-A license
- minimum age of 21 years
- compliance with all state licensing and certification requirements where applicable
- clean motor vehicle report for the past 3 years
- ability to pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
- successful completion of road test
- possession or ability to obtain current DOT health card
- physical ability to lift and move product cases/freight typically ranging from 10 to 35 pounds and up to approximately 60 to 90 pounds depending on location
- flexibility to work 5-day shifts Monday through Saturday with variable days off
- ability to work early dispatch hours from 12 AM to 5 AM
- capability to perform ramp work involving loading and unloading freight
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED or equivalent
- 12 months commercial driving experience
- valid CDL-A license
- must be 21 years of age or older
- meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
- clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for past 3 years
- pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
- pass road test
- attains or has valid current DOT health card and/or able to secure new DOT health card
- able to hand-lift and utilize equipment such as two-wheeler and lift gate to handle product cases/freight of varying size and weight
Job Duties
- Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
- functions as a team member within the department and organization and perform any duty assigned to best serve the company
- performs all required safety checks including pre/post trip inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation regulations
- reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
- follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
- immediately reports all safety hazards and inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
- performs count check of items and check customer invoices of products that have been loaded
- checks and completes in an accurate and in legible fashion all required paperwork associated with freight
- moves tractor to the loading dock and attach preloaded trailer as needed
- drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
- unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
- performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
- verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
- collects money where required
- loads customer returns onto trailer and secures trailer doors
- ensures tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or always secured
- unloads damaged goods and customer returns and brings them to driver check-in and completes necessary paperwork
- unloads all equipment, materials and removes trash from trailers as required
- completes daily record of hours of service and enter in log in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
- performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean as required
- at the end of the shift secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork
- performs other related duties as assigned
