The role of a CDL-A Driver at Performance Foodservice is a pivotal position within the food supply chain. This job involves operating tractor trailers or straight trucks to deliver food and related products to customers both within states and across state lines. The position requires adherence to Department of Transportation regulations and company policies to ensure the safe and timely delivery of goods. Drivers are responsible not only for transporting products but also act as the company's representatives when interacting with customers, vendors, and coworkers. The role includes performing all necessary safety inspections, handling delivery paperwork accurately, loading and unloading freight, and maintaining the cleanliness and security of equipment. The CDL-A Driver works on a schedule that requires mandatory availability on Monday, Friday, and Saturday, with possible six-day workweeks based on business needs. Dispatch hours begin early in the morning between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • minimum of 12 months commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL-A license
  • age 21 or older
  • compliance with state licensing and/or certification requirements
  • clean motor vehicle report for past 3 years
  • pass a drug test after job offer
  • pass a criminal background check
  • pass the road test
  • current or obtainable DOT health card
  • ability to lift and handle freight weighing up to 90 pounds using equipment such as two-wheelers and lift gates
  • ability to work mandatory Monday, Friday, and Saturday shifts
  • willingness to work a 6-day workweek based on business needs
  • availability for early dispatch hours between 3:00 AM and 4:00 AM

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent
  • 12+ months commercial driving experience
  • valid CDL-A license
  • must be 21+ years of age
  • meet all state licensing and/or certification requirements where applicable
  • clean motor vehicle report (MVR) for past 3 years
  • pass post offer drug test and criminal background check
  • pass road test
  • attains or has valid current DOT health card and/or able to secure new DOT health card
  • able to hand-lift and utilize two-wheeler, lift gate and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout shift
  • product generally ranges from between 10-35 pounds and up to between approximately 60 and 90 pounds depending on location

Job Duties

  • Communicates and interacts with customers, vendors and co-workers professionally ensuring questions are answered accurately and in a timely manner
  • Functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and performs any duty assigned to best serve the company
  • Performs all required safety checks including inspections of tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations
  • Reports all safety issues and/or repairs required
  • Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies
  • Immediately reports all safety hazards and inspects trailer for properly loaded and secured freight
  • Performs count check of items and checks customer invoices of products that have been loaded
  • Checks and completes all required paperwork associated with freight accurately and legibly
  • Moves tractor to the loading dock and attaches preloaded trailer as needed
  • Drives to and delivers customer orders according to predetermined route delivery schedule
  • Unloads products from the trailer and transports items into designated customer storage areas
  • Performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy
  • Verifies delivery of items with customer and obtains proper signatures
  • Collects money (cash or checks) where required
  • Loads customer returns onto trailer and secures trailer doors
  • Ensures that tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or always secured
  • Unloads damaged goods and customer returns and completes necessary paperwork
  • Unloads all equipment, materials and removes trash from trailers as required
  • Completes daily record of hours of service and enters in log in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements
  • Performs general housekeeping duties in tractor, loading dock area and keeps trailers clear and clean as required
  • At the end of the shift secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
