The current full-time position at Johnson & Wales University is designed for a professional to manage the catering function and oversee food production, directly supporting foodservice operations and university events across the campus. This role plays a pivotal part in ensuring that catering services meet the highest standards of quality, food safety, and guest satisfaction. The Catering Manager will coordinate all aspects of campus catering, including food ordering, preparation, setup, and cleanup for various university events. This includes managing logistics such as tables, chairs, and necessary catering supplies and equipment. The position requires hands-on involvement in food production, adhering strictly to standardized recipes and procedures while adapting dishes to meet specific guest requests.

In this role, the manager is responsible for planning, preparing, and cooking food promptly to maintain consistent food quality and exceptional service, following all health code regulations. Keeping meticulous food safety and operational logs is essential, as is utilizing proper cleaning and sanitation procedures to comply with university policies and legal health codes. The manager will also oversee inventory management, including the evaluation of all products and ingredients, ensuring that purchasing aligns with budgetary constraints.

Furthermore, this position contributes significantly to staff development by supervising and training department employees and student workers, fostering their professional growth, and evaluating performance against job expectations and departmental goals. The role demands a balance of leadership, operational efficiency, and a passion for culinary excellence to enhance the overall dining experience on campus. Candidates for this position must be prepared to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, and weekends, and must reside within commuting distance of the Providence campus upon hire. This role requires a valid U.S. driver’s license and obtaining and maintaining a food safety manager’s certification approved by the Conference for Food Protection. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education certification(s) and or experience
  • Experience in a management position within catering foodservice or related field
  • Food safety manager's certification approved by Conference for Food Protection
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Availability to work days evenings and weekends
  • Reside within commuting distance of Providence campus upon hire

Job Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree or a combination of education certification(s) and or experience suitable for the position
  • Moderate amount of experience working in a management position within catering foodservice or other related experience
  • Obtain and maintain food safety managers certification approved by conference for food protection
  • Valid U.S. driver's license
  • Ability to work days evenings and weekends

Job Duties

  • Manage the execution of campus catering food production including coordinating food ordering preparation setup tables chairs and other catering supplies and equipment staffing and event cleanup
  • Follow standardized recipes and procedures to cook food set up and stock food stations and garnish food for display
  • Plan prepare and cook food in a timely manner to maintain quality of food service and experience in accordance with health code regulations
  • Utilize appropriate cleaning procedures for assigned duties to acquire maintain and store products according to university policy and health code regulations
  • Maintain food safety and operational logs
  • Adjust recipes and food preparation as needed according to guest request and specifications
  • Prepare inventory lists as needed for food stations
  • Operate assigned kitchen equipment including cleaning and sanitizing
  • Maintain and organize food inventory and purchasing activities for the department and evaluate all products and ingredients
  • Maintain sanitation and appropriate food safety standards for catering activities as established by the university
  • Monitor the departmental budget
  • Supervise and develop department staff facilitating professional opportunities to improve individual capability and managing performance against job accountabilities department goals and established university campus and department policies and procedures
  • Supervise and manage student employees as necessary to enhance their academic and professional development
  • Perform other duties as assigned
