Job Description
UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) is a renowned health care provider and insurer offering a wide range of medical services, research, and education across multiple locations. As an integrated global nonprofit health enterprise, UPMC is committed to delivering advanced health care that is accessible and patient-centered, ensuring high standards of quality and compassionate service. With a strong focus on innovation and comprehensive care, UPMC serves patients and their families with a variety of programs and initiatives tailored to improve health outcomes and overall experience.
The Patient & Family Concierge role at UPMC embodies the organization's dedication to exceptional patient care and service excellence. This position is designed to serve as a vital support resource within the hospital, addressing a broad spectrum of needs for patients, families, and visitors. Unlike traditional roles that might focus on one specific service, the Concierge operates dynamically, adapting throughout their shift to assist in areas such as patient and visitor navigation, environmental housekeeping, dietary assistance, patient transport, and supply management. The main objective of the Patient & Family Concierge is to create a welcoming, smooth, and effective hospital experience that leaves a lasting positive impression.
Key to this role is the ability to provide generalized compassionate service with a strong patient and family focus. The Concierge warmly welcomes patients and visitors, directs them clearly to their destinations, and ensures that all interactions respect patient confidentiality and uphold hospital policies. They are integral in coordinating details like parking validation, patient belongings tracking, and issuing wheelchairs or scooters as appropriate. Beyond the front-facing hospitality duties, the Concierge contributes significantly to hospital operations by maintaining cleanliness and order in patient rooms and common areas, preparing and delivering dietary meals, and assisting in the transportation of patients and medical equipment safely and efficiently.
This multifaceted role requires flexibility and a patient-first attitude, providing critical support to clinical staff by handling essential logistical tasks that contribute to seamless inpatient care. The Concierge also manages telehealth equipment setup and troubleshooting, monitors and restocks medical supplies, and maintains communication channels to ensure that patient needs and safety are prioritized at all times. Operating within a culture that emphasizes the UPMC Values and key experience behaviors such as AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You), the Concierge helps create a standardized, respectful, and caring environment.
Employment in this role can offer individuals an entry into the healthcare field or an opportunity to further develop skills in patient engagement, caregiving support, and hospital operations. It is a full-time position ideal for those with a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of patients and families. While prior healthcare experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory, emphasizing the employer’s willingness to train compassionate individuals who exhibit a strong work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills. The estimated salary range is competitive and reflects the responsibility and critical role the Concierge plays within the hospital system.
In summary, the Patient & Family Concierge at UPMC is much more than a frontline service provider; they are a cornerstone of patient and family satisfaction and quality of care within the hospital environment. Their role fosters a supportive and respectful atmosphere while handling logistics that directly impact patient flow and experience. For candidates seeking a dynamic, impactful healthcare support position, the Concierge role at UPMC offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to exceptional patient care outcomes and gain substantial experience in a leading health system.
