Job Description
UPMC Presbyterian Hospital is one of the leading academic medical centers committed to providing exceptional patient care, conducting cutting-edge research, and fostering innovative education in healthcare. Recognized nationally for its excellence, UPMC Presbyterian is dedicated to serving its community with compassion and advanced medical treatments across various specialties. As part of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center network, it offers patients access to top-tier technology and expert clinical teams, making it a trusted facility for complex medical care and surgeries, including neurosciences and neurosurgery.
The Casual Patient & Family Concierge (PFC) role on the Neurosurgery Unit 6D at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital is an integral position designed for individuals interested in beginning a meaningful career in healthcare without direct clinical responsibilities. This casual employment opportunity provides a flexible schedule where team members complete 36 hours over six weeks, with shifts lasting either 8 or 12 hours during day or evening times. The role focuses on enhancing the hospital experience for patients and their families by offering non-clinical support that complements the work of nurses and clinical staff.
In this role, a Patient & Family Concierge acts as a friendly and compassionate ambassador for the Neurosurgery Unit, greeting visitors, assisting with various logistical tasks, and helping maintain an organized and welcoming environment. Responsibilities include escorting patients and visitors through the hospital, supporting patient transport internally, delivering meals to those admitted, and replenishing supplies necessary for daily operations. The position also involves light administrative activities such as answering telephones and responding to call lights to provide timely assistance.
Crucially, the PFC does not perform any clinical functions such as bathing, mobility assistance involving direct patient care, or administering medical treatment or medication. Instead, the role is designed to alleviate ancillary pressures on nursing staff by attending to essential environment and operational needs, ensuring patient comfort and smooth unit function. This makes it an excellent entry point for individuals passionate about patient advocacy and healthcare support who may wish to advance their career into clinical roles later on.
UPMC values compassion, enthusiasm, and dedication in its staff. The ideal candidate for this PFC position will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills, a desire to create positive experiences for patients and families during their hospital stay, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions effectively. Candidates with prior experience in healthcare or customer service settings will find this experience advantageous, though it is not mandatory.
Joining UPMC Presbyterian Hospital as a Casual Patient & Family Concierge means becoming part of a respected institution focused on innovation and patient-centered care. Team members enjoy the opportunity to make a tangible difference in patients’ lives every day, working alongside expert healthcare professionals in a dynamic and supportive environment. This role supports UPMC’s mission of enhancing the quality of life through excellent healthcare while offering flexible scheduling to accommodate diverse personal and educational commitments. Whether you are starting your healthcare career or seeking to contribute to your community, this position provides a valuable pathway to develop critical skills and a rewarding professional journey within a top healthcare system.
