Job Description

Amherst College is a prestigious liberal arts college located in Amherst, Massachusetts, renowned for its commitment to academic excellence and inclusive campus culture. As one of the leading highly selective liberal arts colleges in the United States, Amherst has taken a proactive leadership role in successfully diversifying the racial, socio-economic, and geographic profile of its student body. This dedication to diversity is not only present in the student enrollment but extends deeply into its faculty, administration, and staff, reflecting the college's core belief in creating a vibrant, inclusive community where all members can thrive intellectually and personally.

The college prides itself on providing a comprehensive educational experience that encourages critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, and lifelong learning. Amherst’s campus life is enriched by a variety of cultural, academic, and social events that foster engagement among students, faculty, and staff alike. The institution’s focus on diversity and inclusion supports an environment where diverse perspectives are valued and collaborative learning flourishes.

Amherst College Dining Services plays an essential role in supporting this community by offering high-quality nutritional options and exceptional service to students, faculty, and visitors. The Dining Services team exemplifies the college’s standards of excellence and community care through culinary expertise and customer service.

The role of Casual Cook - PM at Amherst College Dining Services is a part-time, casual position designed to support these efforts. This position offers a unique opportunity for culinary professionals who are passionate about producing high-quality food and providing excellent customer service in a dynamic educational environment. The Casual Cook - PM position is characterized by a flexible schedule, mainly working from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and requires an individual who can adapt to varying operational needs, including assisting in production, student dining, and campus-wide events.

The Casual Cook is responsible for preparing menu items to the college’s established standards, maintaining health and safety protocols, and demonstrating culinary skills openly to engage with the campus community. This position demands proficiency in food preparation, a knowledge of food trends and history, and the ability to communicate effectively with team members. While the role is part-time with no benefits, the hourly wage ranges from $18.00 to $20.00, depending on education, experience, and other factors.

This position is vital in helping Amherst College Dining Services meet and exceed customer expectations by producing quality menu components and ensuring a positive dining experience. The Casual Cook - PM is expected to maintain a professional, approachable demeanor and contribute to a safe, efficient working environment. Because the college’s needs span throughout the academic year and beyond, flexibility and reliability are key traits for success in this role, which is considered essential, requiring personnel to work even during college closures.

Overall, this opportunity is ideal for individuals seeking part-time employment within a respected academic institution, offering a collaborative and supportive work environment focused on quality and customer satisfaction.
