Job Description
Amherst College, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, is one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges known for its commitment to academic excellence, inclusivity, and diversity within its academic community. As a highly selective institution, Amherst College has made substantial efforts to successfully diversify its student body across racial, socio-economic, and geographic lines, which enriches the overall educational experience. This diversity is mirrored in its faculty, administration, and staff, making it a vibrant place for both professional growth and communal engagement. The college fosters an inclusive educational environment where innovation, leadership, and collaboration are strongly encouraged. Amherst College Dining Services plays a vital role in supporting this mission by delivering exceptional hospitality and catering services to the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
The Casual Catering Event Supervisor role at Amherst College is a part-time, casual position intended to support the college’s catering and dining services in maintaining top-tier hospitality standards during a variety of campus events. This position offers an hourly wage range of $20.00 to $22.00 and involves up to 19 hours of work per week without additional benefits. Reporting to the Catering Manager and Assistant Catering Manager, the Casual Catering Event Supervisor will work collaboratively with the catering leadership team as well as front-of-house staff to ensure a seamless execution of events ranging from formal banquets and receptions to larger-scale campus functions and food deliveries.
Because Amherst College hosts numerous on-campus events that require flexible and dynamic staffing, the Casual Catering Event Supervisor must be prepared to work varied hours, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends, aligned with the college’s event calendar. A primary focus is on providing strong leadership by training, directing, and supervising waitstaff during live events to maintain exceptional service quality and hospitality standards. In addition to overseeing staff performance, the role requires someone who can proactively manage guest relations, promptly addressing and resolving any service-related customer issues with professionalism and care. Event operations safety and compliance with food handling regulations are paramount responsibilities to ensure the wellbeing of guests and staff alike.
This role also demands physical involvement in events, assisting with setup and breakdown duties that include arranging tables, chairs, and banquet equipment, as well as ensuring thorough post-event cleanup to maintain a clean and organized environment. The Casual Catering Event Supervisor must demonstrate flexibility in adapting to shifting schedules or last-minute changes while strictly adhering to established college policies and procedures. In all aspects, this position is key to supporting Amherst College’s goal to provide high-quality dining experiences through attentive, expertly coordinated catering event services.
