Job Description

Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, serving more than 80,000 students across Metro Nashville-Davidson County. With a commitment to innovative reform strategies and a comprehensive approach to education, MNPS prepares students to excel in higher education, the workforce, and their personal lives. As a public institution, the district continuously strives to create an inclusive and equitable environment for both students and staff. This environment supports rigorous academics, social-emotional growth, and personalized learning experiences tailored to meet the unique interests and needs of every student. MNPS offers a wide range of educational programs including advanced academics, visual and performing arts, special education, English language support, and STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics), from Pre-K through graduation.

The Nutrition Services department within MNPS plays a vital role in providing healthy, accessible meals to students and staff in a safe and efficient manner. The role of Cashier in Nutrition Services is essential for the smooth operation of school meal programs. This position is nonexempt and classified under the MNPS Support Hourly pay grade MNPS.SCH003-H, with a working duration of 197 days per year. The Cashier is responsible for receiving and disbursing money through the sale of food items to students and staff, operating cash registers, handling payment methods such as cash, vouchers, or automatic debits, and maintaining an organized and sanitary serving environment.

This role requires someone who works well under general supervision while exercising independent judgment to decide how and when to complete tasks. Essential responsibilities include assisting with the preparation and packaging of food, ensuring portion sizes and temperatures meet health standards, stocking and rotating food items for sale, maintaining clean checkout and serving areas, and providing excellent customer service by answering questions and resolving concerns. The Cashier balances sales transactions, completes necessary reports, and supports the overall efficiency and positive atmosphere of the Nutrition Services program.

Working as a Cashier in MNPS Nutrition Services means joining a team dedicated to supporting the health and well-being of public school students. This position offers an opportunity to contribute directly to the educational environment by ensuring students have reliable access to nutritious meals. MNPS promotes a culture of diversity, inclusion, and equal employment opportunity, with a strong commitment to accommodating persons with disabilities and fostering a respectful workplace. This role is ideal for individuals with strong arithmetic skills, attention to detail, and a passion for serving the community in an educational setting. As part of the MNPS team, employees are supported in their professional growth and contribute to the district's vision of becoming the premier large school district in Tennessee and beyond.
