Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, serving over 80,000 students across Nashville-Davidson County. MNPS is renowned for its dedication to providing high-quality education through innovative reform strategies that focus on student achievement and equitable access to learning opportunities. The district offers a comprehensive range of programs including advanced academics, arts, special education, English language support, and STEAM initiatives, ensuring that every student finds a path tailored to their unique interests and needs from Pre-K through graduation.
As a major urban school district, MNPS is committed to promoting a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and excellence. The district fosters an environment where educators and support staff collaborate to engage, inspire, and empower students to succeed in higher education, careers, and life. MNPS values team members who share a passion for urban education and demonstrate a proactive, can-do attitude dedicated to continuous improvement and student success. The district upholds core values that emphasize respect, fairness, and equal opportunities for all, while complying with legal requirements such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) to support employees with disabilities.
This job opportunity is for a Nutrition Services Cashier within the MNPS Nutrition Services department. This is a nonexempt, hourly position classified under the MNPS Support Hourly grade ladder with a pay grade of MNPS.SCH003-H. The role operates within a structured environment where the employee receives general supervision and is responsible for handling money transactions related to food sales to students and staff. The position has a duration of 197 days per year, aligning with the academic calendar.
The Nutrition Services Cashier plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth, efficient, and customer-focused food service operation within schools. The individual in this position receives payments by cash, vouchers, or electronic debits, issues receipts, provides change, and maintains accurate sales records. The role also includes assisting with food preparation and packaging, managing the serving line by stocking and rotating food items, and ensuring food quality standards such as appropriate temperature and portion sizes are met. This position contributes to maintaining a clean and orderly service environment by performing general cleaning tasks and managing unused food items.
Customer service is a key aspect of the role as the cashier answers questions about policies and procedures, resolves complaints, processes returns or exchanges, and helps promote a positive experience for students and staff. The position requires basic arithmetic skills to accurately calculate transactions and balance cash receipts with sales records. By fulfilling these duties, the Nutrition Services Cashier supports the overall mission of MNPS to deliver great education and service every day while fostering an inclusive and supportive school environment.
