Job Description
Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, serving over 80,000 students throughout the Nashville-Davidson County area. As a large public educational system, MNPS is dedicated to providing high-quality education that prepares students to succeed in higher education, career paths, and life challenges. The district is recognized nationally for implementing innovative reform strategies aimed at enhancing student learning outcomes and elevating the overall educational environment. This commitment establishes MNPS as a forward-looking organization devoted to continuous improvement and excellence in urban education.
MNPS's Nutrition Services department plays a critical role in supporting the health and well-being of students and staff by ensuring access to nutritious and appealing meal options. The department's team members contribute to the pleasant dining experience within schools while adhering to operational standards and food safety protocols. This role offers a unique opportunity to be part of an essential function that impacts daily student life, supporting both nutrition and education goals.
The Cashier position within Nutrition Services is a nonexempt, hourly role graded under the MNPS.SCH003-H pay scale, with a work schedule spanning 197 days per year. Students and staff pay for food items using cash, vouchers, or automatic debit systems, which are managed by the cashier. The position requires handling money transactions accurately, operating cash registers, maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the serving line, and assisting in food preparation and packaging when necessary. Given the nature of the duties, employees work under general supervision and are expected to exercise judgment on how and when to complete assigned tasks.
This position is fundamental to the smooth operation of school meal services and contributing to the overall student experience. Cashiers play an important role in fostering a welcoming and efficient environment for students of diversely aged groups, ensuring that transactions are processed swiftly and courteously. Additionally, this role involves maintaining stock levels and pricing food items appropriately while upholding food safety standards related to temperature control and portion sizes.
Applicants should possess at least a high school diploma or GED and vocational training, along with basic arithmetic skills to handle money accurately and solve typical problems encountered during service. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, customer-focused, and possess the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced school environment.
Metro Nashville Public Schools values diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity employment. The district is committed to creating an inclusive workplace that reflects the diversity of the community it serves, fostering respect, fairness, and merit-based employment practices. The American Disabilities Act (ADA) accommodations are actively supported to ensure all qualified individuals have the means to perform their roles effectively.
Joining MNPS means becoming part of a progressive, student-centered community that is dedicated to educational equity and excellence. The district offers a robust platform for career growth and professional development within a supportive, mission-driven environment. If you are passionate about making a tangible impact on students' lives through a vital support role, the MNPS Nutrition Services Cashier position is an excellent opportunity to contribute to the success and well-being of thousands of young individuals across the district.
