Job Description

Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) stands as one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States. Serving over 80,000 students across Nashville-Davidson County, MNPS is dedicated to preparing students for success in higher education, career, and life. The district is recognized for implementing innovative reform strategies that aim to position MNPS as the highest-performing urban school district in the nation. MNPS fosters a collaborative environment where highly effective teachers, leaders, and support staff come together with a shared passion for urban education and a commitment to making a positive impact.

This opportunity is within the Nutrition Services department and is ideal for individuals who are eager to contribute to the smooth operation of school cafeteria functions. The position is hourly, nonexempt, and classified under the MNPS Support Hourly pay grade MNPS.SCH004-H, with an annual work duration of 197 days. The starting salary for this role is $20.45 per hour, with compensation decisions based on education, experience, and other relevant qualifications.

The role primarily involves performing food preparation tasks and managing cash collection in school cafeterias under the supervision of cafeteria managers. Responsibilities range from assisting with food preparation, weighing or measuring ingredients according to recipes, and serving food following established standards. In addition, the role includes operational preparation such as checking equipment temperatures, ensuring all kitchen tools are ready and functioning, setting up food service lines, and supporting efficient food storage.

Critical financial duties include the collection and handling of payments for food items, balancing the cash drawer at the end of shifts, maintaining cash flow records, preparing bank deposit slips, and ensuring that deposits are made timely to maintain proper financial records. The position also involves maintaining cleanliness and health standards by sanitizing kitchen equipment, surfaces, and floors daily in compliance with local and state health regulations.

This role supports the cluster manager by helping coordinate the work of cafeteria employees, keeping meticulous records of food production, meal counts, milk usage, and a la carte sales. The person in this role is tasked with assisting inventory counts, ensuring food quantities are adequate, and performing other duties as assigned. This position requires a valid Tennessee driver’s license and at least one year of experience in cash handling with the ability to operate cash registers and accurately handle transactions and meal counts.

Metro Nashville Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all individuals. The district emphasizes creating a welcoming and respectful work environment that reflects the diversity of the community it serves. MNPS abides by the American Disabilities Act (ADA) by providing accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities. This role offers a meaningful chance to contribute to the success and well-being of students by supporting the nutritional services that enhance their school experience, all while being part of a dynamic urban education system dedicated to equity and excellence.
