The City of Waco is a vibrant and progressive municipality located in the heart of Texas along the I-35 corridor, roughly equidistant between Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin. Known for its rich history, cultural diversity, and thriving community spirit, Waco is home to over 140,000 residents and ranks as the 25th largest city in Texas. The city offers a wide range of amenities including major attractions, museums, ample recreational facilities, and abundant shopping options. Additionally, Waco boasts significant educational institutions such as Baylor University, Texas State Technical College, and McLennan Community College, making it a hub of academic excellence. The city is celebrated for unique landmarks including the birthplace of Dr. Pepper, the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame Museum, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Nature lovers appreciate Cameron Park, one of the largest municipal parks in Texas, which hosts various sporting events and community activities along the Brazos and Bosque Rivers in downtown Waco.
The municipal governance operates under a home rule city charter with a council-manager form of government. The City Council comprises a Mayor elected at-large and five district-representing council members serving two-year terms. This body oversees taxation, budget approval, appointment of key officials, ordinance enactment, and municipal oversight. The City boasts strong fiscal management policies supporting high bond ratings and a solid reserve fund. With over 1,600 employees and an operating budget exceeding $400 million, the City provides comprehensive municipal services including emergency management, public health, parks and recreation, police and fire departments, utilities, and special services such as the zoo operations.
The City of Waco fosters a work environment built on core values such as equity and inclusion, excellence and innovation, integrity, people, and teamwork. With a commitment to providing exemplary and transparent municipal services, the City fosters a sense of belonging and purpose for both residents and employees alike.
The role available is for a part-time Cashier/Food Service Assistant at the City’s zoo, offering a starting salary of $15.00 per hour. This position focuses on delivering excellent retail customer service to visitors at the zoo. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a passion for customer interaction and possess a courteous disposition. The job responsibilities include providing prompt cashier and retail services, processing transactions related to admissions, food service, or retail sales, and maintaining accurate cash records.
Besides cashier duties, the role requires preparing and serving food while adhering to cleanliness and safety standards. The assistant will also operate a City utility vehicle to support daily zoo operations by transporting supplies and materials across the zoo grounds, ensuring efficient delivery and pickup for admissions, retail, and food service functions.
The position requires cooperation and positive engagement with visitors, City staff, and the general public while strictly complying with City policies and confidentiality requirements. The City of Waco values employees who actively contribute to a positive guest experience and uphold the community's shared values.
Working for the City of Waco offers meaningful and challenging opportunities to make a difference and serve a growing and diverse community. Employees benefit from a comprehensive range of benefits, including health, dental, vision coverage, life insurance, disability plans, and participation in the Texas Municipal Retirement System with a favorable City match. Additional perks include education assistance programs, paid parental leave, employee assistance programs, and longevity pay. This position provides a chance for individuals passionate about customer service to engage in rewarding work that contributes positively to public service and community engagement.
