Job Description
George Howell Coffee is a renowned specialty coffee company with multiple locations in Boston, including the Boston Public Market, Godfrey Hotel, and the newest cafe located on Newbury Street in the Lyrik building. As a locally owned and operated business, George Howell Coffee has earned a reputation for excellence in the third wave coffee movement, focusing on high-quality coffee brewing and an authentic customer experience. The company highlights locally procured treats alongside its expertly crafted coffee, offering a unique and delightful experience for its guests. Each café environment is designed to be inviting and educational, encouraging both customers and staff to appreciate the art and science behind specialty coffee.
The Lyrik Cafe on Newbury Street is seeking enthusiastic and experienced baristas and cashiers to join their dedicated team. This role offers a fantastic opportunity for those passionate about coffee, whether at the beginning of their barista journey or looking to deepen their knowledge and skills in specialty coffee preparation. George Howell Coffee prides itself on providing an exciting workspace where industry knowledge and customer service skills are developed through hands-on experience and ongoing training.
Baristas and cashiers at George Howell Coffee are responsible for consistently serving coffee and espresso beverages that adhere to company recipes, ensuring each cup meets the high standards set by the brand. The role combines technical expertise in coffee brewing with a genuine focus on delivering outstanding customer service. Staff are expected to be well-versed in the menu, including coffee and tea products, and engage with guests in sincere, friendly conversations that enhance the customer experience. Both cash handling and product knowledge are integral parts of this position, requiring employees to be comfortable with point-of-sale systems and adept at answering guest questions.
The position is offered on an hourly wage plus tips, with compensation around $25 per hour. Working at George Howell Coffee means being part of a fast-paced, indoor café environment where teamwork, attention to detail, and a positive attitude are essential. Employees must be physically capable of standing for prolonged periods, multitasking efficiently, and handling the physical demands of moving supplies and cleaning equipment.
This role is ideal for individuals who are eager to expand their coffee education, improve latte art skills, and develop a refined palate for identifying flavor notes and making in-the-moment adjustments to beverages. The company supports professional growth through active participation in training sessions. Candidates should have a contagious energy that uplifts the team, maintain calmness during busy hours, and demonstrate consistent punctuality and reliability.
To ensure the quality of service, employees must routinely maintain cleanliness in their work areas, restock shelves, and perform general café upkeep, including cleaning espresso machines, floors, windows, and other equipment. The company values detail-oriented individuals who take pride in providing not only the best coffee experience but also a welcoming and hygienic environment for guests and co-workers alike.
George Howell Coffee requires its employees to be available to work on weekends, as this is critical to meeting customer demand and supporting the café’s operational needs. This requirement, coupled with the dynamic nature of the café work environment, makes the position suitable for individuals who are adaptable, motivated, and passionate about specialty coffee culture.
