Job Description

SpartanNash is a well-established food solutions company that operates under the C&S Wholesale Grocers family of companies. As a prominent distributor, wholesaler, and retailer, SpartanNash delivers a wide range of grocery and household goods, including fresh produce and the Our Family portfolio of products. Their extensive supply chain network reaches every state in the United States, serving a diverse clientele that includes national accounts, independent and chain grocers, e-commerce retailers, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, as well as the company’s own grocery stores, pharmacies, and fuel centers. SpartanNash is known for fostering a workplace culture described as 'braggingly happy' by its employees, who range from bakery managers and order selectors to IT developers and vice presidents of finance. This inclusive, supportive environment encourages continuous growth, celebrates successes, and emphasizes two-way communication and a strong sense of belonging among team members.

SpartanNash is currently seeking a friendly and detail-oriented individual to join their team at the Fargo, North Dakota location as a Cashier. This position plays a vital role in maintaining smooth front-end operations by managing the cash register and electronic scanning processes to accurately itemize and total customer purchases. A critical aspect of this role is providing courteous customer service, ensuring that shoppers have a positive and efficient checkout experience.

The Cashier will be responsible for handling various types of products during checkout, including dry groceries, frozen foods, dairy, produce, poultry, fish, beef, and pork products. This role involves processing diverse financial transactions, such as cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC benefits, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons, all in compliance with company policies. In addition to payment processing, the Cashier will assist customers by bagging their purchases carefully and maintaining an organized checkout area.

Beyond the technical duties of operating equipment like registers, scanners, scales, and conveyor belts, this position requires attention to detail in merchandising check-stands with items like newspapers, periodicals, and candy. Cashiers must also ensure the correct use of product identification numbers and promptly report any pricing errors or signage issues. Staying informed about current store programs, product locations, and promotions is crucial to enhance customer communication and promote loyalty programs and in-store specials effectively.

Safety and security protocols form another essential component of this role. The Cashier must comply with all company policies related to security, cash handling and drawer accounting procedures, proper handling of damaged or spoiled products, and the sale of restricted items such as alcohol and tobacco. Maintaining cleanliness, safety, and sanitation standards in the checkout area and adhering to all personal protective equipment (PPE) and food safety guidelines are also mandatory responsibilities.

The position may additionally involve assisting with stocking items, helping in other departments as needed, and performing any additional responsibilities assigned to support overall customer experience and efficient store operations. Physical demands include the ability to lift and move items up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, as well as standing and walking for extended periods. Bending, stooping, twisting, and other movements are a regular part of the job, which takes place in a typical retail environment subject to varied temperatures and noise levels.

SpartanNash offers a competitive Total Rewards benefits package as part of its commitment to a People First culture. The company values diversity and inclusion, providing equal employment opportunities for all individuals, including those with disabilities and veterans. While the company fosters associate development and workplace success, it does not sponsor work visas for this position. Overall, this role offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute to a leading food solutions company while developing valuable skills in retail and customer service within a dynamic and supportive team environment.
