Job Description

Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a vital community nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting local affordable housing initiatives through the sale of donated goods and building materials. The ReStore serves as a secondhand retail outlet where community members can purchase quality items at a reduced price. What sets this establishment apart is its mission-driven approach: every purchase directly funds Habitat for Humanity's work to build safe, stable, and affordable homes for families in need throughout the Rockford area. This unique blend of retail operations and community service makes working at the ReStore a fulfilling and impactful opportunity. Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore operates as a part-time, non-exempt position offering competitive pay between $15.00 and $16.00 per hour, reflecting the importance of the role within the organization and the community. The work location is in person to facilitate direct engagement with customers and the team.

The Cashier role at Rockford Area Habitat for Humanity ReStore is a foundational position that acts as the primary point of contact for customers visiting the store. This role is essential in fostering a welcoming and positive shopping environment that embodies Habitat for Humanity's overall mission. Cashiers are responsible for providing outstanding customer service by assisting customers with their purchases, properly handling transactions, and supporting sales floor activities. The role involves operating the point-of-sale (POS) system with accuracy and care, managing cash, check, and credit card payments while adhering strictly to the ReStore's cash-handling policies. Beyond transactional duties, the Cashier also takes on responsibilities such as answering customer inquiries by phone, helping to maintain a clean, organized checkout area, and assisting in merchandising efforts to ensure the store displays are attractive and well-stocked during slower periods. Promoting the Habitat for Humanity mission is an integral part of the job; this means educating customers on how their purchases contribute to the larger goal of affordable homeownership and community development. The position supports collaboration and teamwork by working closely with store management, staff, and volunteers, creating a supportive work environment where every team member contributes to the organization's success. Employees in this role are expected to maintain a professional demeanor and serve as positive ambassadors for the Habitat for Humanity brand, enhancing community goodwill and encouraging further participation in the mission.
