Job Description

Metro Nashville Public Schools (MNPS) is one of the largest and most diverse school districts in the United States, serving over 80,000 students in Nashville-Davidson County. Known for implementing innovative educational reform strategies, MNPS is dedicated to preparing students for success in higher education, work, and life by fostering an environment of inclusive, equitable, and personalized learning experiences. The district prides itself on a highly qualified workforce committed to urban education, diversity, and community engagement. As an equal opportunity employer, MNPS is strongly committed to creating an inclusive work environment that reflects the rich diversity of its student body and the broader community. MNPS supports its staff through clear values, strategic goals, and performance measures that promote respect, fairness, and merit-based employment practices.

The role of Cashier Nutrition Services at MNPS is a vital support position within the district's Nutrition Services department. This non-exempt, hourly position plays a crucial part in the daily operations of the school cafeterias, ensuring that students and staff have access to food services efficiently and with excellent customer interaction. The position falls under the MNPS Support Hourly grade ladder with a pay grade code MNPS.SCH003-H and offers an annual work duration of 197 days. Starting pay is $19.62 per hour, and compensation is determined by factors such as education, experience, and qualifications.

Cashiers in Nutrition Services are responsible for receiving and disbursing money by selling food items, operating the cash register, and maintaining an orderly serving line. Working under general supervision, cashiers follow set procedures but have the autonomy to decide the timing and method of completing their tasks. This includes handling cash, vouchers, or automatic debit payments, issuing receipts, refunds, or credits, and assisting with food preparation and packaging. The role also requires maintaining cleanliness in checkout and serving areas, stocking and rotating food items to meet safety and quality standards, and providing helpful and courteous customer service by answering questions and resolving complaints.

Because the position involves working closely with children and staff in an educational environment, it demands a commitment to the MNPS mission of delivering great public education every day with equity and service excellence. Cashiers contribute to the overall positive experience in school cafeterias, supporting students' nutritional needs and helping to foster a welcoming and efficient environment. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in contributing to public education and community wellbeing through a hands-on, customer-focused role within a large urban school district.
