Job Description
St Vincent de Paul (SVDP) is one of the longest serving social charities in Louisville, Kentucky, dedicated to serving those most in need with compassion and dignity. Established to provide a variety of essential services including homeless shelters, supportive housing programs, professional case management, clinical services, after-school programming, and community food support through initiatives like Open Hand Kitchen and Food Pantry, SVDP has become a cornerstone of social support in the region. Additionally, the organization operates retail thrift stores that help fund its programs and provide affordable goods to the community. SVDP is deeply committed to its mission of helping individuals and families rise out of poverty and achieve stability. The organization fosters an environment of inclusion and diversity, welcoming employees from all backgrounds and prioritizing equal employment opportunity.
The position of Cashier at St Vincent de Paul’s Louisville store located at 4420 Dixie Highway offers an invaluable role in supporting the agency’s operations and mission. This role is designed for individuals passionate about community service and helping others, as it involves direct interaction with customers, volunteers, and donors who contribute to the store’s success and, ultimately, the agency's charitable work. The Cashier is responsible for greeting and assisting customers in a courteous and professional manner, a critical element to providing a positive shopping experience. Operating the cash register efficiently and accurately is another key duty, as it ensures smooth transactions and customer satisfaction.
Beyond the cash register, the Cashier plays an important role in the store’s daily operations including opening and closing procedures and maintaining the store’s cleanliness and orderly appearance. Helping with the pricing and sale of donated merchandise requires attention to detail and an understanding of retail sales. The Cashier position requires standing and moving on one’s feet for extended periods, which is essential to managing the day-to-day flow in the store environment.
Employing individuals in this role allows SVDP to maintain a welcoming retail environment that supports its larger mission to assist vulnerable populations. The role includes a range of benefits that make employment here rewarding beyond just a paycheck. Immediate benefits include paid holidays, free daily meals in the Open Hand Kitchen, free on-site parking, and employee discounts at the thrift store. Additional benefits become available after specific employment milestones such as health, dental, and vision insurance, various disability coverages, life insurance, and a retirement plan with employer matching. Paid time off accrues starting from day one and employees have access to flexible scheduling options.
SVDP provides a supportive work environment where employees can grow personally and professionally and contribute to meaningful and impactful work. As part of the team, the Cashier gains access to education and training opportunities and eligibility for internal promotions. The organization values integrity, inclusiveness, and dedication to community service, offering its employees not only a job but a sense of purpose and pride in their contributions to society. St Vincent de Paul is committed to equal opportunity employment and actively encourages applications from diverse candidates, including women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and veterans. This position offers an excellent opportunity for those looking to join a mission-driven team and make a tangible difference in the lives of people in Louisville and surrounding communities.
