Job Description
The Langley Air Force Base Bowling Center, located in Virginia, is a facility dedicated to providing recreational and social activities for military personnel, their families, and other authorized patrons. As part of the Air Force's Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) program, the Bowling Center serves as a vibrant community hub designed to foster camaraderie, relaxation, and entertainment in a welcoming environment. The center offers various bowling-related services, food and beverage options, and occasional event hosting, playing a significant role in boosting morale among members of the military community. Managed within the framework of Nonappropriated Fund (NAF) positions, the Bowling Center relies on dedicated staff to operate efficiently and provide quality customer service.
This Bowling Center Clerk position at Langley AFB is a permanent, intermittent role with a flexible schedule that guarantees zero hours per week but can extend up to 40 hours weekly depending on operational needs. Compensation for this role is $15 per hour, classified under the NF 1 pay scale and grade. This job offers a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic, customer-focused environment where excellent interpersonal skills and cash handling expertise are essential.
The primary responsibilities of the Bowling Center Clerk involve front-of-house customer service, handling sales transactions, and occasionally assisting with food service duties. The role requires accepting customer orders, ringing up sales, processing credit card payments, and managing cash transactions by making appropriate change. Additionally, the clerk supports the food service operation by setting up serving areas, replenishing beverage and condiment dispensers, and calling customer numbers when food orders are ready for pickup. In some instances, the position entails serving simple alcoholic beverages such as beer, wine, and wine coolers during the bartender's absence.
Sanitation and cleanliness are a significant focus, as the clerk is entrusted with maintaining the Snack Bar area both behind the counter and in the dining area, ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. The role also requires receiving and verifying orders from vendors and proper storage of supplies. Due to the nature of the position, shift work is mandatory, including coverage during evenings, weekends, holidays, and special situations, providing the necessary staffing for continuous service delivery.
Applicants must be at least 21 years old, possess a Food Handler's Certificate or complete food handler training, and be able to pass a background investigation with favorable results. Experience in responsible clerical or office work demonstrating arithmetic skills and cash handling is essential. Moreover, applicants must have experience communicating clearly with customers and dealing effectively with the public. Because this position may involve serving alcoholic beverages, candidates must meet the minimum age and other regulatory requirements for alcohol service.
The position is open to all U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the U.S., with various preference eligibilities applying, including Military Spouse Preference, Veteran Priority, and others. The job does not allow for education substitution for experience, emphasizing the importance of relevant practical experience. The application process involves submitting a resume, completing an online questionnaire, and providing all required supporting documentation by the specified closing date.
Successful candidates will contribute to enhancing the efficiency of the Federal Government while being passionate about the ideals of the American republic, the rule of law, and the United States Constitution. This role offers meaningful work in a supportive environment, engaging directly with a diverse military community while upholding standards vital to Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs at Langley Air Force Base.
