The district is known for its commitment to fostering a nurturing, safe, and inclusive learning environment that promotes academic excellence and personal growth. Among various departments serving the students, the Child Nutrition Services (CNS) plays a vital role in ensuring students receive nutritious and well-prepared meals daily. CNS is responsible for managing meal programs that adhere to federal nutrition guidelines, supporting wellness initiatives, and enhancing student health through quality food service operations.

The Child Nutrition Services Cashier Assistant, also known as Cashier/Assistant, is an essential position within the school cafeteria setting, located across various school sites within the district. This nonexempt, noncertified role classified under Grade 17 is a full-time position with a workweek schedule from Monday to Friday, varying depending on school assignments, and it is not eligible for hybrid telework. The primary purpose of this role centers on performing food preparation duties including cooking and serving meals, salads, and a la carte items following standardized recipes. This position also handles the preparation of entrees, vegetables, and side dishes while maintaining accurate records of food preparation.

In addition to food service responsibilities, the Cashier Assistant serves as the cashier in the school cafeteria, which involves collecting payments for meals and other food items. They are responsible for ensuring precise meal counts, recording fees collected using a computerized point of sale system, and assisting with deposit preparations. This role requires an individual skilled in food safety, as they must either be certified or become ServSafe Certified within 90 days and maintain that certification.

The position demands a strong foundation of customer service skills as the cashier interacts daily with students, parents, and school staff. Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities are essential to navigate the fast-paced cafeteria environment while ensuring compliance with WCPSS Child Nutrition Handbook policies and federal meal program requirements. The Cashier Assistant must also be capable of working independently, managing multiple responsibilities, and adhering to deadlines. Maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen, dining, and serving areas following sanitation standards is also a critical part of the job.

This role offers a hands-on opportunity for individuals who are passionate about supporting student nutrition and well-being and want to contribute directly to a positive school experience. The position requires physical capability for tasks such as lifting up to 40 pounds and performing housekeeping duties including sweeping, mopping, and cleaning. Overall, the CNS Cashier Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting Wake County's dedication to improving student health outcomes through excellent nutrition and service standards.
