Job Description

The Wake County Public Schools is a respected educational institution committed to providing a safe, nourishing, and supportive environment for students across all its campuses. Known for its dedication to excellence in education and student welfare, the school system emphasizes the importance of well-rounded development, including proper nutrition and health. As part of its comprehensive services to students, the Wake County Public Schools operates a child nutrition program that ensures students receive balanced, delicious, and nutritious meals every school day. This responsibility extends beyond food preparation to fostering positive interactions and efficient service within the school community, involving staff, students, and parents alike.

The role available is that of a Food Service Worker within the Wake County Public Schools Child Nutrition Department. This position is pivotal in preparing, cooking, and serving meals, salads, and a la carte items according to carefully standardized recipes that meet federal nutrition guidelines. The Food Service Worker is integral to maintaining the smooth operation of the school cafeteria, which includes accurate documentation of food preparation and the collection of monies using a computerized point-of-sale system. Candidates will be expected to perform duties ranging from meal preparation to cashier responsibilities, ensuring precise meal counts and documentation of fees received for meals and other food items.

This full-time position demands excellent customer service skills as the Food Service Worker will engage daily with students, parents, and staff, maintaining effective communications and contributing to a positive dining experience. The ideal candidate possesses critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team, particularly in fast-paced environments. Responsibilities also include adherence to strict sanitation and safety procedures, upkeep of kitchen cleanliness consistent with health codes, and compliance with Wake County Public Schools Child Nutrition policies.

The position requires a high degree of physical activity, including standing, walking, lifting up to 40 pounds, and using various kitchen and office equipment such as computers and scanners. Training is provided to familiarize employees with federal standards for reimbursable meals, proper food identification, and preparation techniques. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to contribute to their community by supporting the health and well-being of children through quality food service within an educational setting. The school district values diversity and inclusion and provides ongoing training and support to ensure employees thrive and deliver services efficiently and compassionately.
