Job Description
SpartanNash is a leading food solutions company that proudly operates as a distributor, wholesaler, and retailer within the grocery and household goods industry. With a vast global supply chain network, SpartanNash serves all 50 states across the U.S., providing fresh produce alongside its signature Our Family® brand portfolio. As a well-established member of the C&S Wholesale Grocers family of companies, SpartanNash is committed to delivering high-quality products and exceptional service to a broad customer base that includes national accounts, independent and chain grocers, e-commerce retailers, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, as well as its own brick-and-mortar grocery stores, pharmacies, and fuel centers. The company fosters a dynamic and inclusive workplace, where team members spanning various roles—from bakery managers to IT developers, and HR Business Partners to vice presidents of finance—collaborate to create braggingly happy customers and ensure operational excellence across all locations.
The Cashier position at SpartanNash, located at 1826 Vinton in Omaha, Nebraska, offers a unique opportunity to be an integral part of the company’s front-end operations. This role is essential to providing courteous and efficient customer service, as cashiers are responsible for operating cash registers and electronic scanners to accurately itemize and total customer purchases. The position involves handling a diverse range of products including dry groceries, frozen foods, dairy, produce, and various meats such as poultry, fish, beef, and pork items. Cashiers process multiple forms of payment including cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC benefits, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons, all in accordance with company policies to ensure accuracy and security.
Key responsibilities also encompass weighing and carefully bagging purchases, maintaining the merchandising of check-stand areas, and reporting pricing or signage errors. Cashiers maintain a thorough understanding of current store programs such as loyalty initiatives, in-store specials, and coupons, effectively communicating these to customers to enhance their shopping experience. This role requires adherence to company policies on cash handling, product safety, and compliance with laws regarding the sale of regulated products like alcohol and tobacco.
Beyond transactional duties, cashiers are expected to contribute to maintaining a clean and well-stocked environment while following all safety guidelines, including personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols and food safety standards. Flexibility is also important as the role may require assistance with stocking and occasional assignments in other departments depending on store needs. SpartanNash values employees who embody a customer-oriented approach and demonstrate a commitment to the company’s People First culture, which emphasizes associate development, recognition, two-way communication, and fostering a sense of belonging.
This position typically requires a high school diploma or GED, and one year of retail or related experience is preferred. Successful candidates will possess strong verbal communication skills, excellent customer service and organizational abilities, and basic reading, writing, and math competencies. Physical demands of the job include the ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, requiring standing and walking for extended periods as well as bending, stooping, twisting, and turning. Work conditions are reflective of a standard retail environment with varied temperatures and moderate noise levels.
SpartanNash offers a competitive Total Rewards benefits package and is an Equal Opportunity Employer dedicated to associate growth, success, and inclusion. Please note the company does not sponsor work visas for this role. Joining SpartanNash as a cashier means becoming part of a supportive team that values your contributions and helps you develop your career in the food retail industry.
