Job Description

SpartanNash is a leading food solutions company that operates as a distributor, wholesaler, and retailer with a comprehensive global supply chain network. The company specializes in delivering grocery and household goods, including fresh produce and its proprietary Our Family portfolio of products, to a wide array of locations throughout the United States. SpartanNash serves a varied customer base that includes national accounts, independent and chain grocers, e-commerce retailers, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges, as well as the company’s own brick-and-mortar grocery stores, pharmacies, and fuel centers. The company prides itself on cultivating a braggingly happy workforce consisting of diverse team members from various departments such as bakery management, order selection, IT development, finance, HR, and export specialties. This vibrant and inclusive culture feeds directly into the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction and operational excellence.

The role of a Cashier at SpartanNash, located at 1100 13th Ave. East in West Fargo, North Dakota, is crucial in maintaining the company's high standards for customer service. This full-time position involves operating cash registers and electronic scanners efficiently to itemize and total customer purchases. The cashier handles a variety of products including dry groceries, frozen foods, dairy items, produce, poultry, fish, beef, and pork. A primary responsibility is processing a wide range of financial transactions accurately and in accordance with company policies, including handling cash, checks, credit cards, food stamps, WIC, loyalty cards, gift certificates, rain checks, voids, and coupons. Beyond transaction processing, the cashier also assists customers by carefully weighing and bagging their purchases while providing courteous and effective service.

The role demands familiarity with check-stand equipment such as registers, scanners, scales, and belts, ensuring smooth and efficient operation. Additionally, cashiers are responsible for front-end merchandising duties, ensuring that items like newspapers, periodicals, and candy are neatly stocked and attractively displayed. Accurate product identification and PLU usage are vital, as is maintaining an ongoing awareness of current store programs and product locations to assist customers effectively. The cashier actively communicates company programs, special offers, loyalty schemes, and coupon deals, ensuring customers are informed and engaged.

Compliance is another essential aspect of the role, with the cashier expected to adhere strictly to company policies related to security, cash handling, product handling, and the sale of regulated items like alcohol and tobacco. Maintaining a clean, safe, and well-stocked work environment that aligns with company sanitation and safety standards is also expected. The role may occasionally require the cashier to help stock items and cover tasks in other departments as needed to enhance the overall customer experience.

SpartanNash is committed to fostering a People First culture, offering a competitive Total Rewards benefits package, and promoting equal opportunity employment. Ideal candidates should possess a high school diploma or GED, have one year of retail or related experience, and demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills. Physical requirements include the ability to lift and move up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally, standing and walking for extended periods, and working in a typical retail environment with varied temperatures and exposure to outside weather. This role is fundamental in supporting SpartanNash’s mission to deliver high-quality food solutions with a customer-focused approach, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about retail and customer service.
