Job Description
This position is for a Carhop at a reputable restaurant known for its classic drive-in dining experience and strong commitment to customer satisfaction. The establishment is a fast-paced restaurant environment where the Carhop plays a critical role in delivering food and beverages to guests efficiently and with a friendly demeanor. This company values operational excellence and quality, ensuring that all food served meets the highest standards of appearance and taste before reaching the customer. The Carhop works under the direct supervision of the Manager on Duty (MOD) and is considered a nonexempt position, which generally means eligibility for overtime pay under applicable labor laws.
The Carhop is primarily responsible for serving products to guests by carrying trays that can weigh up to 25 pounds, requiring both balance and attention to detail. This role demands outstanding customer service skills as the Carhop must provide quick, polite, and friendly service while promptly responding to any guest requests or concerns. Additionally, the Carhop assists guests with payment, making fast and accurate change, and clears trays and trash from various areas including vehicles, patios, drive-thru lanes, and parking lots. The role also involves routine cleaning and sanitation duties such as trash disposal, mopping, sweeping, washing dishes and food preparation tools, wiping counters, sanitizing food preparation areas, cleaning equipment, and emptying used grease to maintain the restaurant's cleanliness according to operational standards.
Besides the standard duties, Carhops may also be required to support operations by moving and stocking food products weighing up to 50 pounds. A specialized role within this position is the Skating Carhop, who performs all duties while on roller skates and must complete specific training requirements for skating safely and effectively. This unique aspect of the position adds a dynamic element to the guest experience, emphasizing the restaurant's nostalgic service style.
The work schedule for the Carhop includes irregular hours, encompassing nights, weekends, and holidays, reflecting the needs of the restaurant's busiest service times. This flexibility is crucial for meeting guest demand and supporting the operational flow.
Candidates applying for this position should have a fundamental understanding of general restaurant or retail knowledge, possess basic math and reading skills, and demonstrate strong verbal and written communication abilities. Being able to follow directions accurately and multi-task efficiently are essential for success in this busy environment. The Carhop must also show excellent customer service skills to enhance the dining experience for every guest.
The physical work environment requires continuous standing, bending, reaching, moving, stooping, stretching, lifting, and skating for skating carhops. The role involves frequent exposure to heat and hot liquid shortening when cooking and to freezer temperatures during food stocking. Occasional exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures due to varying weather conditions is also part of the job, requiring resilience and stamina.
This position of Carhop offers an exciting opportunity for individuals who enjoy an active work environment and engaging with customers directly. With a focus on quality service and cleanliness, the Carhop is an integral part of the team that ensures guests leave satisfied and eager to return.
