Job Description
D&S Community Services, a part of the Sevita family, is a respected provider of community-based services dedicated to supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a mission rooted in respect, dignity, and empowerment, D&S Community Services emphasizes the belief that every person has the right to live well, experience independence, and engage meaningfully within their communities. As an integral segment of Sevita, a national leader in home and community-based specialized health care, D&S Community Services contributes to a legacy of over 50 years of commitment to enhancing quality of life for individuals facing physical, intellectual, or behavioral challenges. The organization serves a diverse population across the United States, with a workforce of about 40,000 team members focused on compassionate, individualized support for 50,000 individuals nationwide.
This position offers an opportunity to join a mission-driven team passionate about making a difference through direct support roles that emphasize relationship-building and personalized care. The role of the Direct Support Professional is essential in fostering an environment where individuals can thrive, develop new skills, and maintain optimal health and well-being within residential or program settings. This full-time or part-time hourly position is categorized as non-exempt and involves hands-on engagement in various aspects of daily living and program compliance. Successful candidates will deliver support based on individualized service plans that address socialization, health maintenance, behavioral development, personal care, and community involvement.
In this role, employees provide direct assistance to a small group of individuals, typically supporting 4 to 6 residents or up to 10 participants in periodic programs. The professional is responsible for helping individuals with activities such as personal hygiene, housekeeping, transportation, recreational engagement, shopping, and civic participation. Additionally, responsibilities include careful documentation of progress, management of individual assets within budgets, and maintaining confidentiality and respect for the rights of those served. The position demands a high degree of professionalism in workplace relationships, including engagement with families, guardians, and case managers, and adherence to Sevita’s customer service standards.
Health care tasks form a critical part of this role, encompassing tasks like accompanying individuals to medical appointments, administering or supporting medication routines, monitoring general health conditions, ensuring safety during care activities, meal preparation tailored to special diets, and the use of medical equipment. The employee must be detail-oriented and proactive in reporting medical or safety incidents. Employment responsibilities also include mandatory participation in training, adherence to scheduling, and prioritizing teamwork and safety within the workplace environment.
Maintenance duties involve vehicle safety compliance during community transport, general housekeeping, minor facility repairs, yard maintenance, and participation in safety drills. The role requires physical stamina and the ability to exert substantial physical effort, including lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally. All employees must comply with state and organizational policies regarding training, licensing, drug testing, and background checks to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals served.
Sevita is committed to equal opportunity employment, ensuring a workplace free of discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any legally protected characteristic. Those joining this role become part of a supportive, inclusive culture dedicated to providing exceptional community care through compassionate support and professional development.
