Job Description

Mentor Community Services, a valued part of the Sevita family, is a respected organization that delivers community-based services designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a commitment to human dignity and empowerment, Mentor Community Services believes every person deserves the right to live well and have a richly fulfilling career. Operating as a dedicated arm of Sevita, which has over 50 years of service excellence, Mentor Community Services offers a supportive and compassionate work environment focused on enriching the lives of individuals through personalized care and community integration. Employees join a mission-driven team where commitment to service excellence and respect for each person’s unique needs are foundational values.

This particular role is a part-time position based at the Columbia, SC location, offering hours primarily on the third shift from 11 PM to 7 AM every other Friday and Saturday. The position pays an hourly rate of $15.30 and requires the candidate to have an active South Carolina driver’s license for the past 12 months. As a Direct Support Professional, you will provide essential support services to individuals either in residential settings or periodic community programs. Typically, you will work with a small group, usually supporting 4 to 6 individuals in residential environments or up to 10 in periodic settings.

The role necessitates a blend of compassionate caregiving, skilled community assistance, and the ability to implement individual service plans effectively. Key responsibilities include supporting personal care needs, facilitating social and behavioral development, assisting with medication administration, and promoting community integration activities such as shopping and citizenship involvement. This job involves daily engagement in various activities that nurture individual strengths, maintain health and well-being, and provide opportunities for meaningful participation in their communities.

Further, the Direct Support Professional is accountable for maintaining accurate documentation of services and progress, managing individuals’ financial assets wisely according to their preferences, and maintaining professional, healthy relationships with clients and their families. Reporting any concerns such as incidents of neglect or abuse is also a critical aspect of this role, along with practicing confidentiality and supporting the rights of those served.

Given the nature of the role, responsibilities also extend to accompanying individuals to medical appointments, supporting medication regimens, preparing or assisting with meals, and ensuring safe and clean environments through regular housekeeping. You will also contribute to maintaining workplace safety, participate in training sessions, and work cooperatively within a team to foster a positive and effective service environment.

As an employer, Mentor Community Services under Sevita offers a culturally inclusive workplace that embraces diversity and equal opportunity in employment. This role is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of people with developmental challenges while developing a rewarding career in human services with flexible, part-time hours and a supportive team culture.
