Job Description

Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County is a well-established organization committed to providing educational programs that improve the quality of life for residents in the local community. As a collaborative effort among Cornell University, the United States Department of Agriculture, the State of New York, and the residents of New York State, this association operates a diverse range of community programs that foster learning, skill development, and community engagement. One of the key programs operated by this association is the DPF 4-H Camp located in Riverhead, New York, which offers a residential summer camp experience designed to provide youth with educational and recreational activities in a supportive environment. The camp offers an opportunity for camper development through various experiential learning programs and outdoor activities supported by experienced staff.

The role of the Camp Kitchen Assistant at DPF 4-H Camp is an essential position within the camp’s operational team. This full-time, exempt position requires an individual who is dedicated to supporting the kitchen operations under the guidance of the Camp Kitchen Manager/Cook. The salary for this position ranges from $3,325 to $3,845 per month, reflecting the level of responsibility and experience required. The Camp Kitchen Assistant plays a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth running of kitchen and dining room tasks, assisting in meal preparation and service for up to 300 campers and staff in compliance with strict USDA standards and New York State Department of Health regulations.

Key responsibilities include assisting with the setup of the kitchen and dining room during staff training, aiding in meal preparation and service, maintaining cleanliness and sanitation standards, unloading and storing supplies, and supporting daily inventory and safety checks of equipment. Additionally, this role involves preparing CSA boxes for distribution and assisting in planning camper activities related to food services. The position demands flexibility with work hours, including evenings and weekends, and requires the successful candidate to reside at the camp during the entire session. The Camp Kitchen Assistant contributes not only to the logistical operations of meal service but also to the overall camper experience by supporting a safe, healthy, and positive environment.

Professional development and continuous improvement are also emphasized in this role, with expectations to participate in training programs, staff meetings, and to collaborate closely with supervisors for ongoing professional growth. Health and safety are paramount, requiring awareness and adherence to federal, state, local regulations, and organizational policies to ensure a secure workplace.

This position offers a unique opportunity for individuals passionate about food service and working in a community-focused environment. Candidates with a background in food service or experience in camp or similar settings will find this position especially rewarding. Those who demonstrate reliability, teamwork, positive attitude, and adaptability are highly encouraged to apply. This is an excellent role for those interested in contributing to youth development while gaining valuable experience in camp kitchen operations within a respected educational organization.
