CONFIRE, JPA is a Joint Powers Authority located in San Bernardino County, California, dedicated to providing exceptional communications, dispatch, computer information systems support, and geographic information systems to its member and contract agencies. Established to enhance emergency response capabilities, CONFIRE plays a crucial role in coordinating fire, emergency medical services (EMS), rescue, and local government operations throughout the region. The organization operates a 24-hour, 365-day Communications Center that serves as the backbone for direct fire, EMS, and rescue dispatch services for CONFIRE agencies. Additionally, the Communications Center functions as the San Bernardino County Operational Area dispatch, managing large incident coordination across countywide fire, local government, and emergency medical resources. This vital function ensures timely and efficient response to emergencies, thereby safeguarding the well-being of the community.
The Call Taker position within CONFIRE is a permanent, full-time role that demands meticulous attention to detail and the ability to handle high-pressure situations calmly and effectively. Under general supervision, the Call Taker is responsible for receiving and evaluating requests for both emergency and non-emergency services. This role involves accurately entering fire, emergency medical incidents, and local government calls into the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to facilitate prompt and appropriate response by dispatchers. Call Takers must apply established protocols during their assessments to determine the nature and urgency of each call while providing pre-arrival instructions when necessary. This requires a keen ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment. The role also entails providing general information to the public about department policies and regulations and redirecting non-emergency or low-acuity calls to the correct agencies. Rotating shifts are mandatory, including nights, weekends, holidays, and evenings, with mandatory overtime as needed. Salary increases are negotiated under the Memorandum of Understanding, with planned increments of 2.5 percent on July 25, 2026, and 3.0 percent on February 20, 2027. Job Requirements
- Typing speed of 30 wpm
- Successful completion of background investigation including fingerprint check
- Medical examination clearance
- Availability to work rotating shifts including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime
- Ability to apply protocol assessments under supervision
- Must be available for all shifts
- Willingness to comply with operational requirements and shift differentials
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Experience in emergency call taking or related field preferred
- Typing speed of 30 words per minute
- Ability to operate computer-aided dispatch systems
- Knowledge of emergency response protocols
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to maintain composure in high-stress situations
Job Duties
- Receive emergency and non-emergency calls for service and inquiries from the public and enter information in the CAD system
- Screen incoming calls to determine nature and urgency
- Apply protocol questioning and provide pre-arrival instructions
- Adjust call urgency according to guidelines
- Provide general information to the public regarding regulations and department policies
- Transfer low acuity or non-emergency calls to appropriate agencies
- Provide vacation and temporary relief as required
- Perform other duties as assigned
