Job Description
The Cook County Sheriff's Police Department Emergency Communications Center, located in Des Plaines, Illinois, is seeking applicants for the position of Call Taker. The center operates 24/7 and handles emergency and non-emergency calls for service in Cook County and surrounding areas, processing over 2,100 calls a day. Call Takers play a crucial role in entering and dispatching emergency data, ensuring accurate information handling, and supporting the efficient operation of the communications center.
Job Requirements
- Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate
- candidates must be at least 19 years old
- ability to work up to 12-hour shifts wearing a communications headset
- typing skills (30 w.p.m. with 90% accuracy)
- successful completion of written examinations, oral interviews, and background checks
- flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays
- willingness to undergo agency-specific training and certification processes within specified timelines
- preferred experience includes work in emergency dispatch or related fields, familiarity with specific computer-aided dispatch systems, and completion of public safety communications courses.
