The Part-Time Cake Decorator/Bakery Clerk role at Walt Churchill's Market Maumee location is an exciting opportunity for individuals who have a passion for baking, creativity, and customer service. This position reports directly to the Bakery Department Manager and involves an engaging set of responsibilities centered around cake decorating and bakery service. The role requires artistic skill to decorate cakes, cupcakes, cookie cakes, and cookies, often based on customer specifications and trends in cake design. Attention to detail, creativity, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced commercial retail bakery environment are essential.

In addition to decorating, the role encompasses duties typical of a bakery clerk such as stocking bakery cases, managing inventory, and assisting customers with their orders. This position demands excellent interpersonal skills, as the candidate will interact frequently with customers both in-person and over the phone, providing advice and fulfilling special requests in a professional manner. Staying current on decorating trends and techniques is encouraged to ensure that the bakery department remains vibrant and appealing.

An important aspect of this role is maintaining a safe, clean, and sanitary work area in compliance with food safety standards and government regulations. The ideal candidate will possess previous cake decorating experience and have the ability to work efficiently during peak times while maintaining product quality. Since the retail bakery operates on weekends and holidays, availability during these times is also a requirement.

Job Requirements

  • Cake decorating experience or skills
  • Ability to decorate quickly and beautifully to keep up with the demands of a commercial or retail bakery
  • Customer service experience
  • Creativity
  • High school education or GED
  • ServSafe or food safety certification or willingness to obtain one
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Able to frequently lift 5-20 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Decorate bakery items efficiently and quickly while maintaining high-quality designs
  • Keep up with daily bakery production in order to stock the bakery case and floor
  • Complete customer orders by providing professional advice or suggestions, utilizing photo machine, and fulfilling customer’s wishes
  • Stay up to date on cake decorating trends, new styles, and techniques
  • Use creativity skills in decorating and merchandising the bakery department
  • Provide excellent customer service when answering phone calls, taking customer orders, assisting customers at the bakery counter, and helping customers find products
  • Order decorating supplies such as sprinkles, sugars, and seasonal decoration items
  • Maintain cleanliness, sanitation, and food safety standards mandated by government regulations
  • Organize and clean decorating materials such as icing bags and tips
  • Package, wrap, price, and merchandise bakery department products
  • Keep sales floor and shelves full, properly rotate product, and organize as needed
  • Work efficiently to meet the needs of the department and adhere to timeframes as directed by bakery management
  • Perform cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, and cleaning surfaces
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
