Job Description
Tucson Unified School District is a leading educational institution dedicated to providing high-quality public education to a diverse student population in Tucson, Arizona. As a prominent district-wide organization, it manages multiple schools and educational facilities, ensuring a supportive and enriching environment for both students and staff. The district is committed to fostering inclusivity, equity, and nondiscrimination across all its operations, reflecting the community's values and adhering to strict policies that prevent discrimination based on disability, race, color, religion or religious beliefs, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or national origin.
The Food Services department within the Tucson Unified School District is seeking motivated individuals to join as Cafeteria Worker Leads. This role is integral to the daily operations of the school cafeterias across various district locations. The position involves preparing and serving meals and snack bar items from steam tables, grills, snack bar windows, or mobile stations, ensuring that food service standards and health regulations are meticulously followed. The Cafeteria Worker Lead also assumes leadership responsibilities, guiding and coordinating the activities of food service cafeteria workers to maintain smooth and efficient workflow. This job requires a proactive approach as the lead often carries out the work plan for the day in the manager's absence, emphasizing accountability and team leadership.
The employment type is part-time to full-time, with full-time equivalent (FTE) positions varying depending on the specific site and workload demands. Hours typically range from 7 to 8 hours per day, adjusted seasonally based on customer participation volume to meet the dynamic needs of the school community. The work calendar follows the school year, spanning about 10 months, which is ideal for individuals seeking schedules aligned with academic calendars.
A notable benefit of working with Tucson Unified School District's Food Services is the recent increase in pay rates, funded through a community-approved override guaranteed through June 2031. This means employees will enjoy higher wages, recognizing their essential role in supporting students' nutrition and well-being. While some positions are less than 30 hours per week and therefore not eligible for district benefits, roles with higher hours offer access to valuable benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, and more.
Potential applicants can find vacancies across several district sites including Collier Elementary School in the Tanque Verde & Bear Canyon Area, various FLOAT locations (Central, Eastside, Westside), and Howell Elementary School in the 5th Street and Alvernon Area. Each site provides a distinct working environment with consistent expectations of excellence and dedication. Tucson Unified School District encourages internal candidates to apply, with opportunities for transfer at rates consistent with established bargaining unit agreements.
Joining the Food Services team as a Cafeteria Worker Lead offers a fulfilling opportunity to contribute directly to student health and success by ensuring nutritious meals are prepared and served efficiently every school day. The role is perfect for individuals who possess prior food service and cashier experience, who thrive in team-driven environments, and who desire a meaningful position with competitive pay in a respected educational district.
