Job Description
Omaha Public Schools (OPS) is a prominent and comprehensive public school district dedicated to providing quality education and support services to a diverse student population across its district-wide campuses. The district is committed to fostering an inclusive, supportive, and equitable environment for all students, staff, and community members. With a focus on innovation and excellence in education, OPS strives to empower students to achieve success academically, socially, and personally, preparing them for future opportunities and challenges. OPS has a strong infrastructure supporting both academic and non-academic functions, including nutrition services, which plays a vital role in student well-being and learning performance.
The Nutrition Services department at OPS is currently seeking a dedicated Food Service Manager to oversee and manage various aspects of food production and service across its district-wide locations. This is a full-time, hourly position with a minimum of 6 scheduled work hours per day, typically from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with availability required from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during the school months from August through May when students are in session. This role involves supporting schools where managers are absent and requires local travel to various campus kitchens. The position reports directly to the Executive Director of Nutrition Services.
The Food Service Manager’s primary responsibilities include managing all facets of food production, supervising meal preparation and service, maintaining food safety and sanitation protocols, and overseeing daily financial activities such as accounts and deposits. The role also involves food ordering, payroll practices, and ensuring compliance with federal and division guidelines. The manager will assist with operating and cleaning dish machines and manual dishwashing, maintaining rotating food stocks and supplies, and providing superior customer service to students, staff, and other stakeholders.
Applicants for this role must possess excellent organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills to handle multiple projects, manage diverse teams, and maintain strong attention to detail. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with at least one year of job-related experience or training in food services. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in food safety practices, customer relations, equipment operation, and the ability to utilize online computer programs for record-keeping and reporting. Knowledge of Omaha Public Schools’ mission and goals, along with a commitment to equity and diversity, is important for success in this role.
The position also includes responsibilities to meet regular attendance requirements, make independent complex plans and decisions, coordinate food production at satellite schools, provide staff training, and promote excellent customer service initiatives. Physical demands of the role include frequent standing, walking, lifting of up to 50 pounds, and the ability to respond quickly in emergencies. Employees must maintain a professional appearance and attitude consistent with the district’s image.
This opportunity offers a supportive work environment with benefits, an annual uniform allowance, complimentary shift meals, and hourly pay with bi-weekly payments. The Omaha Public Schools district emphasizes nondiscrimination and is committed to equal employment opportunity and accessibility accommodations, demonstrating its commitment to an inclusive workplace. Candidates interested in making a meaningful impact on student health and nutrition are encouraged to apply for this vital managerial role within the OPS Nutrition Services team.
