Job Description

The Phoenix Union High School District (PXU) is a leading educational institution serving a diverse student population of approximately 24,000 students and employing around 3,400 staff members in Arizona's capital city. PXU operates a comprehensive network of schools including traditional high schools, small specialty schools, support schools, micro schools, magnet programs, and extensive Career and Technical Education (CTE) offerings. Known as a district of opportunity, PXU is committed to welcoming, loving, and inspiring all students to achieve significant accomplishments through quality education and supportive environments.

PXU proudly emphasizes inclusive education and equal opportunity, fostering a vibrant community where students and staff alike can thrive. The district provides a supportive work environment with competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits, making it one of the state's largest employers. Their commitment to nondiscrimination extends across race, color, religion, sex, age, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, as well as immigration status.

The role of Cafeteria Manager within the Food Services Department is a critical position responsible for overseeing the preparation and service of nutritious meals to students, teachers, and staff in compliance with stringent State and Federal dietary guidelines. This position operates under the Classified salary schedule at Grade 9 with a starting hourly rate ranging from $22.89 to $23.93, depending on relevant experience and education. It is a 10-month work-year appointment based in assigned schools within the district.

As Cafeteria Manager, you will manage daily kitchen operations including supervising kitchen staff engaged in meal preparation, cooking, serving, and cleanup activities. You will be tasked with reviewing weekly menus and recipes, ordering food supplies efficiently to meet demands while minimizing waste, and ensuring meals meet or exceed USDA's Child Nutrition Program standards. Part of your duties includes operating the school food service program in alignment with established meal patterns, budgets, and productivity standards.

The role demands rigorous attention to health and safety as you ensure that all food handling practices adhere to HACCP guidelines and that kitchen temperatures and equipment are monitored for compliance with health codes. You will also be responsible for managing inventory, preparing daily production records, handling cash registers, and preparing banking deposits. Your leadership will extend to training new kitchen staff in food safety, portion control, and food preparation standards.

This position requires strong interpersonal skills to maintain positive relationships with students, parents, and school staff, providing excellent customer service and promoting a safe and respectful environment. Physical demands include working in a commercial kitchen environment with exposure to hot and cold temperatures, potentially hazardous equipment, and chemicals, along with lifting objects up to 40 pounds.

PXU offers a highly competitive pay scale complemented by a comprehensive employee benefits package including participation in the Arizona State Retirement System, education loan forgiveness for eligible individuals, paid vacations and personal leave, paid winter and spring breaks, and other attractive benefits.

If you possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent, four years of food service industry experience including two years in a supervisory role, and hold or can quickly obtain a ServSafe Manager's certification along with other required certifications, this opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of one of Arizona's largest student populations may be the perfect fit for you.
