The Cafeteria Assistant Manager role is integral to the IDEA Public Schools’ mission by assisting the Cafeteria Manager in leading the Child Nutrition Program (CNP) team at the campus level. This position requires adhering to the food and nutrition standards established by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), along with relevant state agency guidelines. The Cafeteria Assistant Manager plays a critical role in ensuring that all students receive nutritious and appealing meals daily by managing food production quality, ordering supplies, maintaining sales records, handling customer service with parents and students, managing inventory, and collaborating closely with the Cafeteria Manager. The role is hourly, with wages ranging from $17.92 to $22.40 depending on experience, and includes eligibility for performance bonuses based on team performance and goal attainment. In this role, the Cafeteria Assistant Manager is responsible for daily operations oversight, including executing approved menus 100% of the time, ensuring accurate counting and claiming procedures, monitoring participation in meal programs, leading and motivating the Food Service Specialists and substitutes, conducting audits and compliance checks, maintaining food safety and sanitation standards, and managing employee development and retention. The position requires excellent organizational and communication skills, data interpretation ability, and proficiency with software such as Microsoft Office, especially Excel. Candidates must demonstrate strong problem-solving capabilities, adaptability, resilience under pressure, and teamwork.

Job Requirements

Job Duties

  • direct the team to execute the approved menu 100 percent every day
  • ensure every student participating in the meal program takes a reimbursable meal
  • ensure all methods of counting and claiming are compliant
  • observe that counting and claiming is happening at time of service
  • check that all counts of student meals are accurate
  • enter all counts correctly into internal trackers and PrimeroEdge
  • recruit top notch food service specialists and substitutes from the area
  • hold weekly employee huddles on operations and nutritional matters
  • review and submit employees' timesheets every week
  • provide formal, timely and appropriate feedback on work performance
  • develop cafeteria assistant managers for promotion
  • conduct breakfast in the class audits with 100 percent compliance accuracy
  • report recipe and menu errors immediately
  • use campus parent functions to promote meal program participation
  • identify students bringing lunch from home and report reasons
  • promote consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables through preparation and display
  • rotate milk for freshness
  • decorate serving line with appealing nutritional signage
  • implement and maintain salad bars where approved
  • follow designated menu daily and do not serve items outside advertised menu
  • comply with state guidelines for food service operations
  • track and implement changes in compliance and policies
  • correct non-compliant issues promptly
  • reach out to headquarters for finance, nutrition and operations guidance
  • complete food production records daily
