Job Description
The hiring establishment is a cafeteria operating within a school district, providing food services to students and staff. This cafeteria is part of the district's efforts to ensure nutritious and well-prepared meals are available in a safe and orderly environment. As a critical component of the district's food service program, the cafeteria emphasizes maintenance of high standards for food preparation, sanitation, and customer service, adhering to district policies and working closely under the supervision of the Cafeteria Manager, Principal, or Superintendent. The role being offered is for the position of Assistant Cook I within the cafeteria team. This position involves assisting with the preparation, cooking, and serving of various foods in large quantities, conforming to standardized recipes, menus, portion controls, and price schedules. The Assistant Cook I assists in the entire kitchen operation including setting up food lines and steam tables, serving meal components and beverages, cleaning kitchen equipment, and ensuring proper food storage and disposal. Moreover, this role involves handling cash transactions through standard or computerized registers and may include supervision of food service employees, student helpers, or volunteers when directed. The Assistant Cook I should demonstrate essential qualities such as integrity, initiative, dependability, courtesy, good judgment, and cooperative spirit to represent the school district positively.
Working under direct supervision, this role requires someone experienced in preparing food in large quantities and knowledgeable in the use of institutional kitchen tools and safety protocols. The Assistant Cook I must have stamina for prolonged standing and walking in a kitchen environment with varying temperatures and have the physical strength to lift objects up to 50 pounds. They must be capable of following oral and written instructions accurately, maintaining records, and ensuring sanitary food practices. This position is typically full-time employment and contributes significantly to the smooth daily operations of the cafeteria, supporting the overall mission of the school district to provide healthy, balanced meals in a timely and efficient manner.

Job Requirements

Job Qualifications
- Completion of 12th grade or equivalent work experience
- One-year experience in the preparation of food in large quantities
- Knowledge of proper methods of preparing food in large quantities
- Knowledge of use and care of institutional kitchen equipment and utensils
- Familiarity with proper cleaning and sanitizing methods including MSDS
- Understanding of principals of personal hygiene and sanitary food preparation and kitchen safety
- Basic mathematics knowledge necessary for recipe conversion and to accurately make change
- Ability to prepare and serve a wide variety of foods
- Ability to work rapidly and efficiently
- Physical stamina to stand and walk on hard flooring for long periods and withstand wide temperature ranges
- Ability to work with chemical cleaning agents
- Strength to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds
- Ability to follow oral and written directions
- Ability to keep accurate records
- Ability to supervise, assign, and train student helpers
- Ability to operate computerized and standard cash registers

Job Duties
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of a variety of foods including soups, entrees, sandwiches, salads, fruits, vegetables, baking, and desserts following standardized recipes and menus
- Sets up food serving lines and/or steam tables and serves meals or meal components
- Prepares and serves beverages
- Stores or disposes of excess food properly
- Operates and cleans all kitchen equipment such as ranges, ovens, steamers, mixers, choppers, slicers and dishwashing machines
- Stores food and supplies in accordance with instructions and assists in taking inventories
- Takes cash and makes change using either a standard or computerized register system
- Performs other related duties as assigned
