Job Description

T. F. North High School is a dedicated educational institution situated in a high-needs area, committed to providing quality education and fostering a supportive learning environment for students and staff alike. As part of a larger district, T. F. North High School emphasizes excellence not only in academics but also in supporting the community, which includes thoughtfully managed cafeteria operations that contribute to the well-being of everyone on campus. The school is looking to fill a full-time position within its cafeteria operations for the 2026-2027 school term, an opportunity ideal for individuals who are passionate about food service and enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.

The Cafeteria Operations/Cafeteria Aide position plays a critical role in assisting with the production, service, and sanitation responsibilities necessary to deliver meals to district staff and students efficiently and safely. Reporting to the Chef or Sous-Chef, the aide will help with food preparation, support the service process by acting as cashier, and maintain cleanliness in the kitchen and dining areas. The role is non-exempt and entails working approximately 180 days during the school year. Compensation for this position starts at $15.00 to $16.50 per hour, commensurate with education and verified experience, and includes membership in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF) pension system.

The position is vital to maintaining healthy food standards and ensuring that meals served meet quality and safety guidelines. Employees must practice stringent food handling protocols, including handwashing and sanitation routines, to minimize the risk of food-borne illnesses. Working in a high-needs school environment requires reliability, a commitment to service excellence, and the ability to adapt to the daily demands of food preparation and customer service.

This role is well-suited for individuals with some culinary background or interest in food service, including those with post-secondary education in culinary arts, baking and pastry, culinary management, or related fields, although a high school diploma or equivalent is required at minimum. Candidates must successfully complete the Illinois State Board of Education's (ISBE) Food Handler Training and Assessment within 30 days of employment and maintain certification every three years thereafter.

Physical ability to carry out job functions is necessary since the role involves standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 pounds, and the use of hands for handling various kitchen tools and equipment. The work environment typically has a moderate noise level, consistent with busy cafeteria operations.

This cafeteria aide position offers a supportive work environment, a chance to contribute to the well-being of a school community, and competitive wages with attractive benefits, including paid breaks, sick and personal days, and a comprehensive fringe benefits package. This opening remains available until filled, giving interested candidates the flexibility to apply online at any time during the recruitment period. Overall, the role provides valuable hands-on experience in a food service setting within a school environment, making it a compelling option for those who enjoy team-oriented work and are committed to quality food service in an educational context.
