Job Description

Grand Central Bakery is a pioneering artisan bakery based in the Northwest, founded in 1989, that spearheaded a bread revolution by bringing rustic, handcrafted loaves to local tables. This establishment is deeply rooted in values of sustainability and social responsibility, guiding every aspect from ingredient sourcing to employee care and community investment. As a Certified B Corporation, Grand Central Bakery aligns with a global community of companies that leverage business practices to create a positive, lasting impact on society and the environment. This commitment to conscious business practices makes the bakery a beloved and respected brand, both by its customers and within the larger community it serves.

The company operates vibrant cafes that are integral to its charm and customer experience, making each location a warm, welcoming space that fosters connection and a love of quality food and drink. Grand Central Bakery's cafes thrive on passionate team members who are not only skilled in food preparation and service but are also genuinely enthusiastic about contributing to a lively community atmosphere. As part of this driven team, the Café Team Member fills a critical role, engaging customers with exceptional service while maintaining high standards in food and beverage preparation.

The Café Team Member position is a full-time, non-exempt role that offers a competitive hourly wage of $16.96 plus tips, with typical tip earnings ranging from $7.00 to $9.00 per hour. Ideal candidates have a flexible schedule, including availability to work Thursday through Sunday and an openness to weekend shifts, as the bakery operates every day of the year. The role involves regular shifts such as Retail Open, Mid-Shift, and Retail Close, underscoring the need for adaptability and a team-oriented approach.

Responsibilities encompass working efficiently on the sandwich bar and barista station, expertly creating sandwiches and coffee beverages to exacting company specifications, including the ability to craft latte art even during busy periods. The Café Team Member is expected to be proficient with the Point-of-Sale system, able to provide knowledgeable recommendations about menu items, and maintain a clean, sanitary environment throughout their shift. Beyond technical skills, this position demands a collaborative spirit, excellent communication, and a commitment to the bakery’s values including creating an anti-racist, culturally inclusive workplace.

Working at Grand Central Bakery requires a proactive, engaged mindset where individuals pitch in beyond their core duties, either by volunteering for additional tasks or supporting their teammates. Safety and health standards are paramount, with adherence to proper cash handling, food safety compliance, and prompt reporting of workplace hazards or injuries. Physical endurance is necessary as this role involves constant standing, walking, and some physical tasks such as lifting and carrying items up to 20 pounds.

In essence, the Café Team Member is much more than a food service worker; they are an ambassador for a brand committed to quality, sustainability, community, and equity.
