Job Description

Grand Central Bakery is a pioneering and socially responsible artisan bakery based in the Northwest. Since 1989, it has been igniting a bread revolution by bringing rustic, handcrafted loaves to local tables and communities. As a Certified B Corporation, Grand Central Bakery exemplifies the values of sustainability, ethical business practices, and community involvement by using business as a force for good. Their commitment to quality ingredients, sustainable sourcing, and employee care creates a thriving and inclusive workspace deeply connected to the community it serves. The bakery operates vibrant, welcoming cafes that provide more than just food – they create a lively, community-centric environment that reflects the company’s mission and vision.

The position of Shift Lead at Grand Central Bakery is crucial to maintaining this high standard of service and community atmosphere. The Shift Lead acts as a key team member responsible for ensuring smooth, efficient operations on the cafe floor while embodying the company’s core values of sustainability, inclusivity, and quality. This role regularly functions as the Person in Charge (PIC), managing workflow, solving issues as they arise, and fostering an inviting environment for all guests. Shift Leads excel in customer service, employing the company's proprietary 3 Steps to Great Service, consistently delivering exceptional experiences. Their versatility allows them to work across various stations and shifts, including opening and closing duties for retail, office, and food prep areas. They proficiently handle point-of-sale systems, cash operations, and order management, ensuring accuracy and compliance at all times.

Earning an hourly wage of $21.30 plus tips averaging $7 to $9 per hour, this non-exempt role offers overtime eligibility and requires a flexible schedule with the ability to work weekends and varied shifts. The Shift Lead helps cultivate a positive, collaborative team culture by mentoring, training, and coaching fellow team members. They engage in continuous learning, reflect on personal growth, and actively contribute to creating an anti-racist, culturally inclusive workplace. Physical demands such as frequent standing, lifting, and working amidst noise and dust are part of the job environment, shared with production areas. Overall, the Shift Lead is integral to upholding Grand Central Bakery’s reputation for quality, community, and care, making this a rewarding opportunity for candidates passionate about food service, leadership, and sustainability.
