Job Description
James River Church is a pastor-led and staff-driven religious establishment with board oversight, known for its strong community focus and commitment to spiritual growth. The church values integrity, personal development, and fostering a supportive church environment for its congregation and staff alike. The environment is spiritually nourishing and encourages leaders within the staff to maintain a close personal walk with the Lord, uphold strong family values, and embody high standards of honesty, confidentiality, and Christian principles. Staff members are integral to the church’s mission and are expected to actively promote unity and positive attitudes within the church family. Beyond spiritual commitment, the church emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and professional conduct among its employees. The James River Church also operates the James River Cafe on campus, a facility aimed at providing refreshments and a welcoming atmosphere for both guests and congregation members. This cafe is a place where quality, service, and community intersect, making it a central hub for engagement within the church’s daily activities.
The Barista role within the James River Cafe is essential to upholding this vision of community and service. Reporting directly to the Food Services Director and Campus Cafe Lead, the Barista plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality food service to all customers with warmth, professionalism, and efficiency. In addition to preparing beverages following the cafe’s distinguished espresso and brewing procedures, this position demands a comprehensive understanding of the cafe’s daily operations and the facility layout, as the barista often serves as an information point for visitors. The role requires someone with exceptional social skills who can maintain a positive and professional demeanor at all times, contributing to a welcoming environment. The Barista schedule includes specific shifts on Sundays from 7 am to 1 pm and Wednesdays from 5 pm to 9 pm, making flexibility and punctuality key traits.
This position combines the responsibilities of customer service, cash handling, and operational maintenance, including cleaning and baking duties, all performed with diligent attention to safety and procedural compliance. The individual in this role will receive comprehensive initial training upon hire, with ongoing training to keep up with cafe procedures and safety standards. The Barista must be adaptable to changes, capable of problem-solving on the fly, and able to follow detailed instructions both verbal and written. Working at James River Church Cafe is more than a job; it is part of a larger ministry initiative that fosters joy, enthusiasm, encouragement, love, and servant-mindedness, according to the church’s values. This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who wishes to integrate their work with their faith while developing their skills in a supportive, mission-driven environment. The work ethics and spiritual goals of the church are deeply integrated into this role, making it ideal for individuals who live their faith at work and excel in community-facing roles within food service.
