Job Description

James River Church is a vibrant, pastor-led and staff-driven organization committed to delivering a welcoming and uplifting environment for its congregation and visitors. As a prominent community center, James River Church not only focuses on spiritual growth through regular services and fellowship but also supports its members and guests through various ministries and services, including hospitality amenities such as the James River Café. The church maintains a strong emphasis on personal integrity, community unity, and spiritual development, making it a place where both staff and volunteers are encouraged to live out their faith with enthusiasm and dedication. Their staff is viewed as leaders, expected to uphold a personal walk with the Lord, strong family values, financial responsibility, and loyalty to the church's mission and values. This approach fosters a family-like atmosphere where each member supports one another with compassion, encouragement, joy, and servant-mindedness.

The Barista position at James River Church's James River Café plays a crucial role in delivering exceptional food service and hospitality to all customers. Under the guidance of the Food Services Director and Campus Café Lead, the Barista ensures that patrons receive quality beverages and food in a welcoming and professional manner. This role demands not only technical knowledge of coffee preparation, including operating espresso and brewing machines, but also a deep understanding of daily café operations and customer service excellence. The Barista becomes a friendly and knowledgeable point of contact within the building, often providing helpful information to visitors and members alike. Attention to detail, including following precise coffee-making procedures and café opening and closing protocols, is essential to maintain the café's high standards.

The work schedule for the Barista includes specific hours on Sundays from 7 am to 1 pm and Wednesday evenings from 5 pm to 9 pm, reflecting the needs of the church’s service and event times. The role requires handling monetary transactions accurately, maintaining balanced cash drawers, and preparing café deposits regularly. The Barista also participates in baking, cleaning, and ensuring the environment stays safe and pleasant for all customers and staff. Flexibility, punctuality, and a positive approach to learning new skills and adapting to changes are highly valued qualities for this role.

Furthermore, James River Church encourages its Barista staff to embody the church's core values of joy, enthusiasm, encouragement, love and care, and servant-mindedness. These values are backed by thoughtful spiritual references and encourage Baristas to express these qualities in their customer interactions and teamwork. Training is provided upon hire and continually throughout employment, ensuring that the Barista is well-prepared not only in technical duties but also in safety protocols and customer service. This position is ideal for individuals who are passionate about hospitality, eager to grow in a faith-centered workplace, and who thrive in a dynamic and supportive environment. It emphasizes building not only coffee but relationships, all while representing the welcoming spirit of James River Church.
