Job Description
James River Church is a pastor-led, staff-driven church with board oversight, dedicated to spreading the Christian gospel and maintaining the doctrines of the church. It is a vibrant community focused on spiritual growth, unity, and service, where staff members are expected to actively participate in promoting the church's message and values. The church emphasizes a strong personal walk with the Lord, devotion to family life, financial responsibility, high integrity, and a supportive team environment. This positive and encouraging atmosphere is rooted in biblical principles that foster joy, enthusiasm, encouragement, love, care, and a servant-minded approach to all interactions.
The Barista position at James River Church offers an exceptional opportunity to serve the community while being part of the James River Cafe team. Working under the Food Services Director and Campus Cafe Lead, the Barista plays a critical role in delivering quality food and beverage services to church members, visitors, and staff. This role requires not only proficiency in preparing coffee and operating espresso machines but also exceptional social skills, professionalism, and the ability to provide helpful information about the building layout. The Barista is often a point of contact for customers, helping to create a welcoming and hospitable environment.
Key responsibilities include handling monetary transactions accurately, managing inventory and supplies, adhering to health and safety regulations, and maintaining cleanliness and safety standards within the cafe. The Barista is expected to follow detailed opening and closing procedures, adjust to changes in daily operations, and support ongoing training efforts to stay current with cafe procedures and safety practices. This role demands physical stamina, including the ability to stand for long periods, lift up to 30 pounds, and perform tasks requiring bending and twisting.
More than just a job, this role embodies the heart behind all the church's activities—joyful service, enthusiastic participation, encouragement, genuine care, and a servant’s mindset. The Barista is encouraged to bring joy and positive energy to every customer interaction, reflecting the church’s values of love and compassion. Continual personal and professional growth is supported through training and a collaborative team environment, making this position ideal for individuals looking to combine their passion for coffee service with meaningful community engagement and spiritual growth.
