Job Description
The SASED Transition Program is an established educational and vocational training program dedicated to supporting students with disabilities and developmental challenges as they prepare to transition into adult life and employment. SASED, or the Special Education Service District, provides a comprehensive range of services designed to empower students aged 18 to 22. The program is rooted in a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters skill-building, independence, and real-world job experience. Situated in a community-centric facility, the SASED Station Cafe serves as both a learning environment and a functional retail space where students can practice and enhance their vocational skills.
The Student Helper/Food Handler position, specifically the Cafe & Store Associate role, is designed as a volunteer training opportunity for currently enrolled students in the Transition Program at SASED. This part-time position provides invaluable hands-on work experience in a real retail and cafe environment. Through active participation in daily operations, students gain practical skills including customer service, food and beverage preparation, sales transactions, organizational duties, and effective teamwork. These foundational skills help students build confidence and employability, essential for securing future employment opportunities.
This unique role combines elements of retail and food service, helping students to develop independence and responsibility in a structured but supportive setting. Students work closely with peers and supervisors, gaining not only technical job competencies but also interpersonal communication skills and workplace etiquette. The position operates part-time from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., allowing students to balance training with their educational commitments.
The Cafe & Store Associate role is a critical stepping stone for young adults transitioning from school to work. Beyond the practical skills, students also develop transferable skills such as punctuality, reliability, cooperation, and the ability to follow directions. As volunteers, they also earn valuable resume-building experiences and volunteer hours. This program aligns with SASED’s mission to foster inclusion and provide tailored vocational training, equipping students to contribute meaningfully to their communities and pursue independent living.
