Job Description

The Nines, Portland, is a premier luxury hotel situated in the heart of downtown Portland, Oregon. Known for its sophisticated blend of urban style and historic charm, The Nines is housed in the beautifully restored 1909 Meier & Frank building, a cherished piece of Portland's architectural heritage. This hotel is more than just a place to stay; it offers a distinctive experience that celebrates Portland's creative spirit and local culture. Within The Nines, guests can enjoy two acclaimed culinary destinations: Urban Farmer, a farm-to-table steakhouse emphasizing fresh, sustainable ingredients, and Departure, a rooftop pan-Asian restaurant that has earned high praise for its innovative cuisine and stunning city views. The hotel also champions a living sustainability philosophy with onsite honeybees, hydroponic gardens, and a house butcher, reinforcing its commitment to responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship.

Art is a central part of The Nines experience, featuring over 400 locally curated pieces including the iconic Bird Song chandelier and unique student monotypes in every room. This artistic immersion further encapsulates the hotel’s dedication to thoughtful, local detail and a sophisticated Portland spirit.

At The Nines, all associates are vital to fostering welcoming and inclusive environments where kindness, excellent hospitality, and genuine connection are paramount. These values align seamlessly with Sage Hospitality’s mission to create meaningful experiences for guests and staff alike.

The Busser role at Departure, one of Portland’s most celebrated restaurants within The Nines, is a dynamic and essential position responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and efficiency of the dining environment. The Busser clears used tableware, napkins, and refuse, wipes down tables and chairs, and manages debris and crumbs on the floors surrounding dining areas. By resetting tables according to high service standards quickly and efficiently, the Busser helps ensure smooth turnover and seating for new customers.

Beyond clearing tables, the Busser retrieves cleaned dishes, glassware, and utensils for immediate restaurant use and maintains a stocked and orderly bus station to maximize productivity. The role also involves sweeping restaurant floors regularly and stocking requisitioned items while rotating supplies appropriately. Assisting waitstaff by refilling beverages and responding to additional condiment or tableware requests is another key responsibility.

Physical demands of the position include lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds, continuous standing, and the agility to perform a variety of movements such as balancing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching throughout the shift. The position requires someone with basic knowledge of restaurant operations who is motivated, friendly, and cheerful, contributing positively to the vibrant dining culture.

Departure restaurant holds a Gold certification for Sustainability at Work, reflecting the establishment's commitment to eco-friendly practices. Employees enjoy numerous benefits, including access to a complimentary cafeteria, 401(k) matching, hotel discounts through marriott.com, and financial perks like pre-tax savings accounts for parking and public transportation. Conveniently located near all MAX lines and Portland Streetcar routes, the workplace offers prime access for biking, public transit, driving, or walking. Additionally, associates receive a $50 TriMet monthly subsidy, supporting sustainable commuting options.

This role is perfect for individuals who embody qualities such as boldness, energy, care, drive, strategy, and daring spirit. The Nines and Sage Hospitality Group are looking for remarkable people who are passionate about delivering outstanding guest experiences and who want to be part of a team that truly makes a difference.
