The Athenaeum, an integral part of Caltech, is a distinguished dining and social facility that operates seven days a week. It offers an inviting environment where members of the Caltech community and their guests can enjoy exceptional dining experiences. The role of Bus Person at the Athenaeum is a vital position that supports the dining service by ensuring the dining rooms are well-prepared, clean, and efficiently maintained. Under direct supervision, the Bus Person is responsible for setting up and breaking down dining room areas according to established protocols, maintaining cleanliness, stocking necessary supplies, providing customer service, and assisting with basic food and beverage preparation. This role requires flexibility, as shifts may include split hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays to meet the operational needs of the Athenaeum.
The Bus Person helps maintain high standards of sanitation and safety, following both Caltech's internal guidelines and regulatory agency requirements. Duties may also include serving food and beverages per orders, posting order tickets, closing dining rooms, transporting equipment, and practicing the proper handling and storage of banquet materials. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Prior experience in food service or hospitality preferred
- Must be able to communicate in English while performing assigned duties
- Must be flexible to work a split shift overtime weekends and holidays as needed
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift and or carry up to 50 pounds of tables dishes glassware and food trays etc
- Valid California Food Handler’s Card
- Valid RBS Alcohol Server Certificate
- Ability to follow and maintain maximum standards of ServSafe sanitation and safety
Job Qualifications
- Must be able to communicate in English while performing assigned duties
- Must be flexible to work a split shift overtime weekends and holidays as needed
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift and or carry up to 50 pounds of tables dishes glassware and food trays etc
- Must possess a California Food Handler’s Card
- Must possess an RBS Alcohol Server Certificate
- Must be able to follow and maintain maximum standards of ServSafe sanitation and safety to ensure the highest standards for food and beverage service
Job Duties
- Maintains dining room areas including stocking set up and breakdown according to protocols
- Greets and assists customers
- handles and follows up with routine requests
- Maintains overall cleanliness and presentation of dining room areas
- Buses trays plates etc and cleans tables for upcoming customers
- Prepares food bars and or buffet areas with appropriate food items and supplies as directed
- Ensures all drink equipment is clean and working properly
- Maintains maximum standards of sanitation and safety
- May serve food and beverages to clients per order
- May process and post order tickets according to protocol
- May have dining room closing responsibilities
- Transports equipment such as podiums tables and chairs to the dining areas and sets in place
- Practices the safe handling care and storage of all banquet equipment
- Keeps the dining room and storage areas clean and always organized
- Performs other duties as assigned
